I was bored and found myself looking at some of my favorite players stats/videos.. I noticed he has had 1 less carry this year than he did last year before his injury. But what I found significant was his YPC. He was at a 5.1 YPC last season, now he is at a 3.9 which is not up to his ability. His yards are down a little bit above 100 rushing yards from last year and I wanted to know why. I was watching some of Ronnies highlights from last year to this years highlights and it came to me what has been different.
What I noticed was his lack of touches, but im not talking 20 carries like I have tried to point out on this board for a good amount of time, I'm talking about his coming out of the backfield. Ronnie was drafted for a few reasons. One being his power running ability with good speed, but also his out of the backfield abilities. Ronnie has played in 8 games thus far and has started 6 of them. This year Ronnie has only 15 catches! Last season he played/started 7 games and had 39 catches! This is what suprises me the most this year on this offense. We have under utilized Ronnie as a reciever so far this year. It is not like his average is stunningly low coming out of the backfield. His average is 9.5 YPC whereas his YPC last year was 10.0, not too much of a difference. Ronnie has shown he can make big big plays coming out of the backfield last year, but also this year. This came to me on sunday. Ronnie was doing decent running the ball til the end he got shut down. He got opportunites to make plays out of the back field and he did so. He converted big on a much needed 3rd down and 19 yards!
Now when I think about why his rushing yardage is down this year then last year, with just about the same amount of carries, it comes down to how we use him. We have made Ronnie Brown a one dimensional player thus far this season. Last year what made Ronnie so great was the fact he came out of the backfield to make plays also. Now when opponents play Ronnie, they hadnt had to to prepare for Browns recieving abilites because when he is in there he is either running the ball, or pass blocking. This affects Ronnies rushing and yards per carry just for the same reason.
I just wanted to put out something new to discuss on this board. I think we are under utilizing Ronnie in a way that he has become a one dimensional player this year. Ronnie showed his great recieving ability some in the Bronco game this past sunday. Hopefully we can get Ronnie loose this sunday against Seattle because they probably wont expect it. Lets make Ronnie a two dimensional player and Lets go Fins!
