Breakouts '06: Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown
July 3, 2006
I'll take "Could I Be Any More Obvious?" for $200, Alex.
Yeah, I do feel I'm cheating a bit by declaring Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown my unofficial AFC East breakout player. But hey, can you really think of anyone better? Without a doubt, Colleague Dan Pompei was right on.
While that committee thing with Ricky Williams worked pretty well in Nick Saban's first year, helping the team earn a 9-7 record, I'm glad Ricky is no longer in the picture.
I'm not here to chide Ricky for his latest misdeeds -- I just want to see Miami let Ronnie run, run and run some more. Other than a few problems with fumbling, Brown showed every bit of the moves and instincts needed to be the next great back in this league.
I am not sure if I'd rather have Brown or that other young pro back in Florida, Cadillac Williams, but I am getting a pretty good idea why Auburn went undefeated with those guys splitting carries.
While Brown may not have the same speed as Williams, he has the same potential for explosiveness, with a bit more durability and versatility. Brown is a big reason for me picking the Dolphins to return to the playoffs, as the complement for other big reason -- a Saban-coached defense. This team is about ready to smash some people, and Brown will be its most smashing success in his second season
