Read a article on NFL.com this morning about the #1 pick being a anchor to all teams due to the 30 Million Dollar + contracts that are being paid out to "Rookies". Regardless of where a player lands in the draft all are question marks until they play in the league.
The league really needs to address this, come up with a Rookie cap of some type or some other type of idea that may work. A team with a #1 pick should have the phone ringing off the hook with offers, Not sitting by the phone like a desperate teen waiting on a call that never comes.......

the NFL should do what the NHL and NBA do already have a set amount that can't be negotiated on every pick. It is ridicouls how these rookies are getting paid for what??? They havent even touched the field. If I was a owner I would throw away the first 5 picks every year just not draft anyone with them beacuse most of the time it's not worth it.

Totally agree Wadeshow it's worrying the amount of money a 22 year old has to deal with, especially when they get paid more than 6/7 year pro bowlers and even future Hall of Famers.

I'm just glad we hit a home run when we drafted Jake Long, that's a safe pick if ever there was one, he's already one of the better LTs in the league and with a couple more seasons he'll no doubt be elite and a regular Pro-bowler (although the PB is a popularity competition).

I completely agree... Rookie contracts are absolutely rediculous. In no other industry are you shown the bank vault unless you've EARNED it.

Set the amounts for every pick... load itmwith incentives if you will.. but 40mil, 50mil+ for rookies is an abomination. Contracts like that should be given to the worthy players in FA.

At first I thought the NFL should use "windows" for every pick in the first round, but then I realized just about every player will go for the highest amount in the given limits.

So now I believe it should be a set amount of money. I also think the amount should be different for every position. Obviously skill positions would have a higher salary. After the first round they could lift the limit all together, but could not earn more than the 32nd pick.

I'm sure there are plenty of ways from keeping the rookie contracts down, certainly anything at this point would help. Highly drafted rookie contracts are completely ridiculous!

This is nothing new, it's been talked about for years.

It's another reason Jake was signed beacuse they knew he could play... Because the FO could not follow up 1-15 with another huge miss

The contracts really only kill you if you make a mistake because they get so much guaranteed money. If a bad team makes the wrong choice then that kills them which means that they'll be bad for even longer.

A rookie salary cap is long overdue. Imagine what Jake Long would've costed if there was a cap.

Rookie Cap

i agree with the rookie cap idea...

All they really need to do is set a maximum cap limit for each draft position. Then after the first season the owner, player and agent can all sit down and renegotiate the players contract if and only if the coach and owner decide if they want to invest more money in that player. This would free up millions upon millions of dollars for vetern players to sign multi-million dollar contracts they have actually earned.

Like most good ideas this will probably take 10 years to actually come true but it should have been done when back in the 70's when contracts started getting out of control for rookies.

Goodell hates the fact rookies get paid so much and is going to do everything is his power to end it. The collective bargaining agreement is coming up real soon and should be interesting.

But they could've had Jake Long anyway if there was a rookie cap in place
