Roquan Smith wants out

No team can talking legally to Smith without Chicago's permission.

These stupid players who don't have agents really gum up the negotiations.

I like R Smith as a player but it makes no sense to pay a LB who does not rush the passer the kind of $$$$$ he wants.

Jim, the Bear defense is nothing like how the Fins would utilize Smith’s quickness and athleticism. At least that’s how I see it. He’s actually faster off the ball than Baker, from what I’ve seen.

What about the owner? Could Ross talk to him, maybe make an offer under the table?

He had 6.5 sacks in 38 games at Georgia so it is not just with Chicago were he has not rushed the passer.

I am not criticizing him as a player, he is an excellent "off the ball" LB.

But I am not paying a LB the kind of $$$$ he is demanding unless they pressure the QB a lot.

Jim, UGA had pass rushers a-plenty at DE, a position they heavily sign. I’m sure Brandon Jones and before him Rashad Jones weren’t “blitz specialists” in college. Yet they both had a lot of specified blitz packages. Anyhow, Maybe we could get the Bears to carry some salary, as we did for Tannehill?

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Smith may not be a pass rusher.

However, wouldn't his skill set greatly upgrade that position, while at the same time allowing Tindall or whoever to solely spy on the Herbert's, Allen's, mahomes and Jackson's of the NFL.

HE himself may not be rushing the QB, but he himself enables the ability for someone to focus on these QBS.

I know I simplified it. Please excuse me.

But if acquiring Smith enables us to neutralize those QBS running attack....
Then 20 million would be a steal IMO.

This is potentially a SB team making move.

25 years old? Nows the time.

The salary cap can be manipulated some but there is still a limited amount of money to go around. It's just not prudent to spend that kind of money on a low to moderate impact position when you're going to have more players to sign and you still have your QB on a rookie deal that will need extending or replacing.

My 2 cents.

Fair point.

But offer a 3 years, front loaded contract. Everyone knows year 3 will be his next pay day year.

Make him happy and wealthy now.

At 27, he will still have the opportunity to breaK the bank again.

By time his contract is up, well be able to make those decisions on guys like Tua and others.

We get atleast 2 years to see what this team can do.

No cap situation like the Saints. However, this is pretty much our offseason for the next 2 yeara lol.

It can work. I would do it.

But I understand why you wouldn't.

For me, I just think this is the diferrence between a Superbowl contending team or getting knocked out in the 2nd round.

Good job pointing out just ANOTHER piece of the team building puzzle. We're gonna run out of $$ eventually. I do think it wouldn't hurt the FO to ask for the Bears to carry some of Smith's salary. We may have to give up a player of comparable worth, something I mentioned in my original posting.

They want him there so it doesn’t appear they plan on moving him. If things go bad during the season you’d expect them to revisit it.

Their roster is pretty bare if they move Smith. At which point you have to move Quinn too or your spinning your wheels.

I'm at the point that I say you don't pay the house for him. You trade him if you get good value. Our defense already is good and we might not have a Pro Bowl LB but we have a pretty deep group and a couple of young guys who I think we can do very well and win with. There's no need to push the panic button and give up a ton of assets for him. He's not Tyreek. He's not going to change our defense the way Tyreek changed our offense.
