Still doesn't look like Dolphins are interested.

One of the more intriguing questions of the preseason is why teams with obvious needs in the interior of their offensive lines have declined to sign free agent guard Evan Mathis despite the fact he is a former Pro Bowl player.

Well, that intrigue is expected to end this week, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus, who represents Mathis.

"The news is we'll have a decision on a team by the end of this week," Rosenhaus said during his weekly appearance on South Florida's WSVN-7.

Mathis has had interest from the Seattle Seahawks and "other teams," according to Rosenhaus. He has not visited the Miami Dolphins despite their obvious need to upgrade the interior line.

And why?

Well, Mathis has up to now wanted a deal that would pay him around $5.5 million this season or what he was scheduled to make from the Philadelphia Eagles before they cut him in June. No team has been willing to come close to that price.

And so the chance are quite good Mathis is now going to be lowering his asking price.

I do know that Mathis would like to play for the Dolphins and his kin former Dolphins nose tackle Bob Baumhower has put out feelers with the team to try to make that happen. Rosenhaus has also pitched the idea of adding Mathis multiple times to the team, specifically football executive vice president Mike Tannenbaum.

And yet ... nothing.

Sooner he signs somewhere and people get over it the better

Let someone else sign the pensioner to a massive contract

I wanted us to trade for Mathis for the last 2 seasons, but not this year. Too old, too expensive. Linemen can decline real fast when they hit old age (by NFL standards) look how fast Clabo went from really solid to a disaster. Willing to pay Mathis 5 million to see if he hits that wall this year? I sure aint

Rosenhaus is making this out to be a bigger situation than it is. Every week Mathis seems to be "close" to making a decision or signing. Tells me he is very far off from any legit interest. Truth is, Mathis got greedy and never should have left Philly. So ready to see this done.

Its okay people do not want Mathis, but the team's guard position is not strong enough right now, Albert is not ready, Fox will not stay healthy and is not talented enough to hold up in the meantime and there is no back up center.

The line is a mess and is going to get the QB injured.

Shame Mathis isnt a left tackle or center then...

Even if he was I am not spending 5 million on a backup center lol

I would still like to see the team talk/meet with him if that really hasn't happened. He is obviously going to have to lower his price and our O-line is razor thin.

Obviously, he is not, but he would add a quality piece to the line and I have state multiple times, Mike Tannenbaum has a lot of lifting to do over the next few weeks to find his 5 starters and 2 active backups on game day.

What I would do is try to sign Mathis or Rob Sims to play LG, go with Turner at RG, sign Jake Long or Anthony Collins as my swing OT and maybe after Week 1 where I do not have to have salaries guaranteed, I could look to sign Chris Myers as my backup Center/Guard.

I am sorry that I don't trust Dallas Thomas and still think Jamil Douglas is a year away.

All I am doing is doubling down the idea of protecting Ryan Tannehill.

BTW, I do not think Tannenbaum has to find 7 players…Pouncey, Turner and James are part of that 7 IMO.

I'm not as worried about the guards as I am about plan "B" at left tackle...if we're fortunate Albert returns and stays healthy all year....if not?

We need to be scouring under every rock for a better backup tackle solution.

Look, the guy is going to make mistakes this year . . . he isn't perfect. But you are severely discounting the Dolphins leaving him at LG from day 1, the gains he has made with his strength and his hand placement and the fact that Miami has said that Dallas Thomas has "pulled away" some from the overall guard position.

He doesn't have to be a pro bowler and we can't afford to add a Pro Bowler salary to the 2016 cap. I agree with most, the more concerning thing is the LT spot and Albert being healthy, but I am not confident Anthony Collins is an upgrade over a healthy Jason Fox. He should be, but he was the worst rated tackle in the NFL last year, and Tampa, who had a ****tier line than us, cut him.

I get it, you believe Mathis well be better if we have to go with Fox, I think you are overplaying the guard position because of the crap we've thrown out there the last few years. Dallas is better than the "crap" we've seen, and was functional last year at guard . . . it is not far fetched to think he takes "several" steps forward in 2015.

And like most people, your main distrust seems to be coming from his play at tackle.

I believe he is still fanning the fire. Just for kicks though, Besides the Seahawks which teams have shown real interest of late. From what I remember, it's the Bills,Jets and Dolphins. Bills was a while ago but they brushed off any real interest. Jets said they couldn't afford him at his price. Dolphins reportedly offered a lot less. So I think it's down to those four legitimately. Of the four, Mathis has only visited and did a physical with the Seahawks. I would think if any other team was serious they would have had him in for a visit. My guess would be the Seahawks is the team Drew is talking about, if he is speaking truthfully.

Bring back Jake Long - he's now no more "broken" than Albert...

If Jake was smart he'd retire. He's made a ton of money . . . he'll be a cripple if he keeps trotting that bad knee out there trying to play football. He needs to severely humble himself and take a $1.5 million type of deal for one season, not guaranteed for injury.

Problem I have is, why on earth would a guy with his money take that deal? Retire Jake, just retire.

Teams with worse OL situations than us are passing on the guy.

I think KC is in the mix also, but nothing has seemeed to change as far as the Dolphins interet goes- little to none.

When there is little to no interest they seem to retire like Sims just did. Long is probably close to that point. He has had a workout or two I believe which is slightly better than some of the others.
