I had a couple rules questions that a few of you guys may know. I was watching coverage on the whole Vick/Eagles story and they (NFL Network) said that Vick could not be listed as a 3rd string QB if he is going to be used in a "Wildcat" formation because the 3rd string QB cannot play if the other two QBs are still active in the game. So my frist question is, do you think Pat White will be listed as a RB or WR this season? Or will we just not see him in the Wildcat? My second question is, if Ronnie Brown is lined up as QB in the wildcat, is he granted the same special rules as a QB (i.e. the protected slide and roughing the passer)? Ok, hope you guys can help out...

U would think they would know the rules being they work for a network called the NFL network lol. As long as Vick is listed as an active player the rule does not come into play. This is for teams that want to carry an extra player and not list one qb as active

to your first question, Vick can't play if he's listed as emergency QB. that's a difference to your 3rd QB. the emergency QB doesn't count against the 45-man gameday roster, but he can be activated if all other QBs get hurt. then, no other QB will be allowed back in. if Vick were to be put on the gameday roster ouright, even as 3rd QB, he can sub in and out of the game.

as for the 2nd question, if Ronnie stayed in the pocket and passed the ball, he'd enjoy the same privileges as every other QB.

Ok, that makes sense! Thanks fellas. Yea NFL Netork is a little sketchy on rules sometimes.

the 3rd string QB Is the emergency QB. so if Vick or White were listed as the 3rd string (emergency) QB, they could not come into the game to run "wildcat" plays. once the 3rd QB enters the game, the other two QB's can not come back into the game.the 3rd string QB does not count against the game day roster though. as far as Ronnie Brown goes. once he runs toward the line of scrimmage to run, the rules that protect a quarterback to not apply.

NFL'S "third-quarterback" rule -- sometimes misunderstood:
Seventeen years ago (1991) the third-quarterback rule was instituted to enable teams to have an emergency quarterback available who was not on the 45-man game-day active roster, since many teams, for strategic purposes, only carried two quarterbacks on their game-day roster.
Everybody thinks they understand the NFL's "third-quarterback" rule. But do they?
The rule states that if a third quarterback is inserted before the fourth quarter, a team's first two quarterbacks cannot be used in the game at any position.
Another aspect of the rule is sometimes misunderstood. It is a coach's decision as to whether a third quarterback will be used.
The active quarterbacks do not have to be injured for a team to use its third quarterback.

if you don't declare the 3rd QB as emergency QB, he can come in. you have to put him on the 45-man roster though. remember, the emergency QB is a roster exemption. he's the 46th man on gamedays.

so, you can have 3 quarterbacks dedicated on the 45 man gameday roster, and another qb designated as the emergency quarterback?

what i am saying is, you can't have the 3rd quarterback seperate from the emegency quarterback. 3rd quarterback = emergency quarterback.

If u put the third qb on the 45 man active roster u can. This rule is to help teams use an extra spot if they want to.

i think you can, although you made me reconsider after posting that link lol

I read an article a couple of days ago about this. it was from a twitter feed. somebody brought this up after vick signed with the eagles. they were saying that vick and white may be listed as the 2nd string QB's of the eagles and dolphins want to be able to use them in the game for wildcat plays. either that are list them as some other position. i am very curious now to see what the answer is to this question.

The answer is as long as they are on the active 45 man roster it doesnt matter what they list them as. You can have 4 active qb;s on game day if u like. Now if they decide to list them as the emergency qb then those rules apply. You are only the emrgency qb if u are listed as such and not on 45 man roster

that is going to be a valuable roster spot to use for a few plays. that is another point the article was making when i read it. it was saying how some position players may have to play special teams, because that roster spot was used for a 3rd quarterback. i don't know how it will work out, but we will see.
