First off, allow me to explain myself.I doubt anyone is more pissed at
Ricky for doing what he did last year than me.After saying that, yes
I would welcome him back if his head and heart was in it(as a back-up).
How many old-timers like myself remember when Zonk,Kiick and
Warfield left for the WFL?They weren't thinking of thier Dolphin
teamates then. That destroyed Miami for awhile and I hated them for
that. Now fast forward a few years, the WFL has folded and Zonk
wants to leave the Giants (after the Miracle in the MeadowLands)who
could blame him,"Zonk had a big part in that fumble".and in 79 we
welcome him back..Yaaa the hero returns. He has a good year ,almost
a 1000 yds.We even traded a very good back (Leroy Harris) to make
room for him, then Zonk asks for more money,Joe Robbie say no,Zonk
quits and leaves us holding the bag.He wasn't thinking of the team
then, was he?But no one ever says anything negative about the
Zonk.Hell I still love the guy.Zonk bailed on us(twice)because of
money and he is in the ring of honor.Ricky bailed on us because of
drug and mental problems. We forgave the guy with the money issue
but we hate the guy with mental problems.Any opinions from old-timers
that remember the Zonk from 79?

that is the best response to this whole ricky thing. how can we as people be mad at someone who has a mental illness...he didn't quit cause he's a pot head ( or used to be) , he left cause he is confused. good post......can't wait to hear what others have to say about it.

I remember and I was disappointed (nay, pissed) when they left and was happy when Zonk came back. The issue of money can be taken care of by negotiating a new contract (bonuses, more up-front $). More $=problem gone. Ricky's problems are not so easily dealt with. What incentive do you offer Ricky that will take care of his problems?

I see your point and remember being upset. But one big difference, Zonk won two suberbowls for us and got us to another!

Gotta disagree with ya on this one Namor. Zonk, was far more valuable than Ricky Williams. He was also a different kind of back. Zonk was a time thief..he rarely broke a 20+ yard run, but 4 yards per carry was an absolute given. As you well might remember the Miami Dolphins were not a high scoring offense, they just totally OWNED "T.O.P.". Rickys runs were more like a slow pass because he broke so many long runs the clock couldn't be used as a factor. Yes, Quarterback inconsistency played a big part of the problem too. To think that Joe Robbie allowed Zonk to bolt over a $75,000 contract demand was and to this day is outrageously stupid to me. JMO :D

:roflmao:

I hadn't thought about that...

I remember that barely... I never knew why he left was too young to care. But in the end I feel everybody has the right to do what they want to do.

Sure Ricky bailed and it hurt us but it was Dave's job to be ready for it and he wasn't. In retrospect if Ricky's leaving had any impact on getting rid of Dave then I am glad he did what he did. I mean hell you could argue (in retrospect) that what Ricky did was actually best for the team down the road.

Bottom line is I would be exstatic to see Ricky back in a fins uniform. He is my second favorite Fin back of all time, second only to THE ZONK.

If Ricky quit because of money would we forgive him quicker?

I never blamed Csonka, Kiick and Warfield for leaving

The NFL, in fact all professional team sports, were lowballing player salaries to near slave status. Employees had close to zero bargaining power. Take it or leave it. Plus they were being shot up with pain killers and basically shoved on the field, lied to about the diagnosis of their injuries and the potential longterm impact if they continued to play. There is plenty of devastating info available on the internet in this regard. Dave Hyde mentions it heavily in his book "Still Perfect" regarding the '72 Dolphins.

I was a kid and knew the Dolphins would suffer. But my dad explained the bargaining power accorded by the other league. He had just gone through a strike at his workplace over unfair salaries and labor practices. I wish there were multiple viable pro football leagues to this day. Salary caps are a farce. If you have those, there should be mandated profit caps as well. Three college friends of mine majored in sports administration and later worked for professional franchises. The stories they tell about management lies and abuse are beyond belief.

Zonk won us two superbowls so I can never be mad at him or Kiick, Warfield....you have to realize how short the average career of an NFL player is...most players would not turn down big money even if the WFL did not pan out. Ricky quit on as at the worst possible time and he was 40-60% of the offense depending on how you look at it. That's why I can't forgive Pothead Rick. Herman Edwards (Jets coach) was the hero for the Eagles against Zonk in the Miracle in the Meadowlands...I remember that play quite well. The Giants ended up firing a few coaches over that play.

I remember it well. I always supported Zonk. I totally put the blame about Zonk leaving both times totally on Joe Robbie. In fact to this day I despise Joe Robbie for being cheap to his great players :yell:
I have enough annimosity toward Joe Robbie that I was happy that the stadium is no longer under his name. :D

How many more SB's would we have won had they not left for the WFL? What if we hadn't won those two SB's? What if we had won one with Ricky? Would any of this matter? They both left the team because they were selfish. Granted that Robbie was really cheap, Zonk still was looking after himself instead of the team.

If you can forgive Zonk then you can forgive Ricky.
