Saban and the draft (New article)

The guy should get over that there weren't any qb's worth taking. would you rather have feeley and ronnie brown playing or feeley and sam morris/travis minor playing while aaron rodgers, the 2nd overall pick, holds a clipboard?

Thanks for the link.
I really wanted Orton in the 4th but now im really glad we got Daniels without him we would be in serious trouble at CB

If Corey Webster had fallen to us, our whole draft mifgt have been different. Orton would have been nice. Actually, I thought we were going to go after Derek Andersen, the 6'6" kid from Oregon in the 5th.

i would rather have a scenario that doesn't include feeley. that said, #2 was too high for rodgers, daniels is a better pick for us than orton, and i personally wanted nothing to do w/ mcpherson. ronnie brown was a great pick and will be a star for us, so the fins will just have to get their qb at a later date.

I go to Purdue and it would be hard for me to wish 0-16 on Miami every year now if you guys got Orton. He was an early canidate for Heisman and tore up a very defensive orienated Big 10. Had he not gotten hurt and miss 3 games I am sure he would of gone much higher than the 4th.

A guy with 31 tds and 5 interceptions in an incomplete season is alright in my book, he will be missed.

I was in favor of drafting a QB with a first day pick but only for one that had the potential to become a starter.I dont see the point of wasting a pick on a QB to be a backup or long range project.

Apparently Saban had Smith,Mc Phearson and Orton in his sights.I do believe he would have drafted Smith if given the opportunity.

Saban had too few picks to work with thanks to the previous regime and had some tough choices to make.

Harvey Filakov is a clown. He critisizes Saban for not addressing the QB issue citing our less than steller players at that position, yet completely ignores the RB situation which was worse and was addressed by the best back in the best RB class in recent history.

There will be plenty of opporunities to draft, sign and develop young players in the QB position over the next few years.
What good would it have done any young QB to be throw to the wolves behind our line with no talent running behind him?

Teams the draft QB's and expect them to singlehandely turn a franchise around in their first season are going about it all wrong. You might improve from 4 wins to 7, but you'll never win a championship like that.

Take a look at Eli Manning last season, or watch it unfold before your eyes in San Fran this year. The success of Big Ben re-iterates my point of Harvey Filakov being a crackhead. The Steelers had built an amazing team with two incredible RB's, a top notch defense and proven stars at WR before they drafted their young talent, and saw what he could do.

Drafting a QB this year would be a wasted pick. Saban has enough of a brain in his head to realize "First things First." Unlike Harvey Filakov writing columns about how we didn't draft the next Marino.

When Saban first took the job he said he was going to draft by BPA. Instead, he goes out and drafts by need. Why couldn't he just get a cb in free agency? I know he got Edwards but there has been plenty of better talent available to fill that void. I like most of our draft but Saban let some better talent slip by to draft some of his picks. Orton or McPherson would've been great picks. I'm also still bitter that he didn't get A.Hawthorne after he slipped to the 6th rd, especially with the need for a dt.

If it had been Wanny he would have been crucified.Saban gets a free pass because we still trust him. After all he is the expert.

The way I see it, the best option for Miami was to trade up with San Fran and take Alex Smith. San Fran was offering the pick and I think Smith was our best shot at an elite prospect. Instead we now have a logjam at RB with Ronnie Brown, Ricky, Lamar Gordon and Travis Minor. I do understand though with the way this draft was, it wouldve been very difficult to make a move, but still even though we had to stay at #2 Braylon Edwards was the best player available and shouldve been taken ahead of Brown. I dont really understand why we didnt use a pick on Mcpherson or Orton, but maybe the reason was that Saban likes Feeley enough that he doesnt feel any of the mid-rd. QB prospects are any better then him. I wouldve loved Mcpherson cause I think he has probably the most upside of any QB in the draft, I think if Saban did like him he shouldve pulled the trigger on him in the 3rd rd. instead of taking a risk on an injury prone LB like Channing Crowder. I was not very happy with this draft, and hopefully after a year in the NFL Saban can do a better job next year.

We had just gotten back our 2nd round pick and we were not giving it up to move to #1 and take Alex Smith. We hardly have a logjam at RB, Ricky not on the team yet, Brown a Rookie, Gordon played 2 games last year, and Minor is a 3rd RB at best. Taking Edwards would create a real logjam at WR with Booker a pro-bowler on the bench. Mcpherson was way to big a risk for any GM to take him in the 3rd or 4th. Crowder was the maybe the best LB in the SEC last season.

I dont think Crowder has been hurt in 2 years.....yes, he's playing on his 3rd ACL in one knee, but I believe he's been relatively injury free since 2002.
