Nick Saban isn't thrilled his 2006 rookies aren't contributing the way last year's crop did, and that fact glows in neon now because the team playing the Dolphins on Sunday will start a handful of rookies and play six or seven before the afternoon is over.

But neither is Saban disappointed that with one notable exception, this year's rookies aren't really helping Miami's cause.

''There's some disappointment,'' Saban said. ``But I think at the positions we have guys, we're not disappointed in their progress. We're not disappointed in the guys that are playing ahead of them.

Awww u think Nick??...Kinda whatever Hes pullen his hair out over the Jason allen and NOT Marcus Mcneal pick.

Whether rookies are starting or not is somewhat misleading ....

Sometimes rookies start -- not because they are impact or great players ... but because -- that's all you have. That in NO WAY implies that they are / were great draft picks ...

You want your rookies to NOT have to start -- at least until towards the end of the 1st season ... so they can learn and adapt -- so that when they do go in ... they have confidence in the system, know their responsibilities and have confidence in their ability to contribute.

That being said .... IF you are fortunate enough to get a true IMPACT player ... then that player needs to get on the field as soon as possible ...

The BOTTOM LINE is that you judge draft picks in their second year .... NOT their rookie year .... and whether they start or not as a rookie does NOT measure their worth as a draft pick

Remember smith at left tackle he started and where is he now.

I don't even agree with that. Drew Brees was awful in his second year.

I Personally wonder if Nick is intentionally sitting jason allen out because of being a holdout and embarassing saban. its directed at him and future drafts.

Nah

I just don't believe that, Saban is giving the kid time to develop. I sure wish he would put him on the field though, seems to me since we are not going to the playoffs, now is the time we should put JA in and get him some game experience. Apparently Nick is a supreme optimist.

if you judge drafts in there second year then ronnie brown, crowder and daniels are all very mediocre players.

No chance of that..... Nick Saban is "teaching guys a lesson" now? Because of a contract thing? Like that will make draft picks sign for less money than they are worth because Saban will sit them?

No way.

If he's intentionally sitting a better player because that player somehow embarassed him he may not have "future' draft picks to worry about.

Some people need to realize that the draft isn't an exact science. There are about what 200 player every year that are drafted. Many of them will never play a down in their carreer. Just because a player was drafted in the first round doesn't mean that they are going to be a great player. There are many players that are drafted in the first round that are out of the NFL in a couple years. There is no coach or GM that is perfect at drafting, so I dont look at draft picks as that big of a deal because you never really know what you are getting. Draft picks are like buying scratch off tickets from the lottery. Sometimes you buy a $10 ticket and win $10 sometimes you buy a $20 ticket and lose, and every now and then you buy a $1 ticket and win $50. You never know what your getting.

You have to give draft picks at least 3 years to reach their full potential.

Yes, but we are talking about the entire draft class here. How unforgiving would you be if Spielman and Wanny were still here? Just curious
