...because not only was Wright not the first player he took in the 7th, he wasn't even the first DEFENSIVE LINEMAN Saban took in the 7th. At the very least it is certain that Saban thinks Fred Evans brings more value to the team.

maybe u are right. im not trying to say ur wrong but its just how u interpert it . he could of known something we didnt. im just happy we got both of them.

Or he thought someone would take Fred Evans in the next 10 picks and knew that Wright would be available later on.

I agree

Or he knew he could be available later on and the shoulder injury probably had something to do with it.. Its okay, just assume with little or no common sense then start a meaningless thread about it.

Wright wasn't a steal at all. Every scout knew exactly who he was, and where he was projected to go last year, they just didnt think he was worth taking.

I dont know, maybe he just thinks rod wright had more of a chance to be there when we picked next. I know it sounds off, but alot of teams watched fred evans work out right before the draft and teams were supposively impressed.

In 98' Zach Thomas wasnt our first LB taken in Rd. 5, but we still felt we got a major steal... when we drafted ZT he was known as a "steal" obviously he was. But i mean the whole thing about drafting some1 first just is our coaches feel of the situation.

Wright is a tweener, DT/DE in a 3-4.

He might play DE for you guys. Its a good risk for the 7th round, but this guy plays like a, ummm...... puzzy. I think he has the right coach though, so he should be pushed.

Saban also said in his press conference that Evans would most likely be a NT and Wright would play DT in the 4-3 alignments and DE in the 3-4/hybrid, so Evans may have had more value as a NT b/c we already have guys like Vickerson and Manny Wright that are similar to Rod Wright. Saban also said Evans had gotten up to 320lbs...anyone know if that's true?

There's some merit to that but it's a risky strategy so we can assume Saban thought enough of Evans to take that risk. He wasn't willing to risk losing Jason Allen by trading down EVEN to get another pick so all these things tell me he didn't think Wright was such a monumental steal in the 7th or he would not have taken the chance that he did.

It's interesting that everyone passed. However, for whatever it is worth, I have not heard one pundit, anywhere say, "Yeah, 7th round, that sounds about right."

The kid was three/four year starter on a team that runs a pro-style defense (Tampa's D). It's not like Tommy Frazier going undrafted a triple option QB. He's also a 1st team consensus All-American, who made the biggest play in the biggest game this year.
