ohhhh boy...I know its a little machiavellian but I think Saban might have a nasty little plan instore next year. Follow my twisted frame of mind; the collective bargaing agreement goes into a freefall for one year, next year. Saban has an owner who supports him and his vision. Saban has spent the entire off-season signing players to one year contracts, we also have quite a few near the end of theirs. Saban could, if he wishes sign anyone of these guys to contracts with big first year numbers and smaller numbers for future years - this could and would protect us salsry cap wize for years to come and put us in a position of power in free-agency for the forseeable future. Most teams will be unable to do the same because they have given longer term contracts and restructuring with signing bonuses does not work because they are proreated over the lifetime of the contract. It is a long shot but he would be my vote for evil master genius if he attempted it!:couch:

speaking for myself, I am bored with the lack of news, but not enough to discuss next year's possible free agent contracts. Sorry blue.

If the CBA is allowed to end without any agreement, all of the players will essentially be free agents. Even those with long term contracts.

I think your idea holds a lil water but there are a 2 big problems I see w/ it

1.A team can restructure a contract whenever they want so they can restructure it to have it 90% paid in the uncapped year. So in reality any team can do what your proposing and with owners like Jerry Jones, Snyder in Was, and Allen in Seattle that is not somthing that you want b/c they have the deepest pockets.

2.The owners and NFLPA are not going to let an uncapped year take place. NFL is a fined tuned machince and is envyed by the other sports by how well it is run. So they will not let the uncapped year happen.

I agree with TKO, wait I agree with a bills fan!!! But there is NO way the NFL will let 2006 go uncapped.

If there is an uncapped year the NFL will have a hell of a time getting a cap back in again.

If there is no salary cap the NFL will become a have/have not league and teams in smaller markets (Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Minnesota) will struggle to compete....the NFL would become Major League Baseball.

Just because the Dolphins are a "have" team and would be one of the teams that could spend like crazy does'nt make it a good thing.

I like the NFL just the way it is...the only thing I would like to see is:

  • Stipulation that you could resign players that you drafted. Some kind of system that alotts a certain percentage of your teams cap room for this purpose. This would give teams that draft well an advantage over teams that draft poorly. Kind of like the NBA's system where teams can sign their own guys even if they are over the cap.
  • I'd like to see Gene "Tagliabue's b|tch" Upshaw get a better deal for the players. The players are the backbone of the league and have the right to be paid better. I know there are people saying "they are all overpaid"...I BEG to differ. Every NFL player takes years off his life by playing this game. The NFL is making a boatload of cash and the players deserve more of it. I'd like to see the percentage of "league revenues" alloted to the players as salary under the salary cap be increased a few percentage points.
  • A "franchise player" exemption. Kind of like my first point accept expanded. You should be able to have 1 or 2 players on your team that don't count under the cap.

No offense Blue, you are one of the better posters but when I clicked this topic and it ended up being about next years contract negotiations I wanted to punch a sleeping baby in the face and then shoot myself in the mouth.

Thats just me though

I think all 3 of your points are really good.

I agree w/ the first point the most though. Teams spend so much time and money on the draft that they should have a monetary advantage when there rookie year ends. I think it would stabalize the league more and fix the problem of veterans getting cut all the time.

:yeahthat:

I think he's right. In Sabans first few months of being an NFL head coach he's figured out how to circumvent the salary cap.

He's that smart.

Blue, you might be on to something, but at the same time, Saban wants these guys to prove themselves before giving them long term deals

Losman all you do is come around and talk smack, do you ever contribute anything to a converstion?

Parity is the one thing that the NFL has over all other major sports. I can't see the NFL ever lifting the salary cap and risk having an NFL team like the Yankees or Bo Sox.

I, for one, will argue with anyone who says that Pro athletes are overpaid. I just heard this morning that Oprah made $225 million last year...ONE YEAR!
So, for a Pro athlete that makes $4-$5 million in a year is actually Underpaid if you look at compartively. Sure, there are professions where people are underpaid, Teachers, Policemen/women, Firefighters etc. and deserve to be paid ALOT more!
Not to mention the lifespan of a pro athlete is very short lived.
And my last point, to make this short, not just anyone can do what Michael Jordan did, or Shaq, or Marino, Montana, Elway....I think there are plenty of people out there that could do what Oprah does.

Two things:

1. I highly doubt the league will let it get to a no cap season.
2. IF a no cap season does happens I think it will hard and maybe impossible for the league to get the cap back.
