Saban Giving Elam Second Chance

What has he done to make ammends? I dont know much about this guy, but sexually assaulting a woman is a pretty scummy action, and I dont know if there is much that can be done to make ammends for that..

though i didn't know him personally, he was a nice guy (humble, even) in high school. We were in the same class at CNHS. i was shocked to see him get in that much trouble. perhaps he fell in with the wrong crowd up at Notre Dame. I wish him luck.

i'm also pleased to see atari bigby was signed (since i attended UCF when he did).

I agree that sexualy assualting a woman is the bottom of the barrell. However, I trust Saban and if he thinks the kid deserves a second chance then so do I. Keep in mind I really have no details about this kid and what happened at ND. I guess Saban will apply a short leash policy.

No thank you on Elam. I can excuse a bar fight or minor altercations, because sometimes people just tick you off. However, as the father of a 15 yo daughter, I don't want a rapist on this team. He's a coward and low character guy.

I hate to dissagree on such a subject, (and I have a 27 yr old daughter), but you and I don't know the specifics of the issue. He was convicted of sexual assault, not rape. He may be a coward and low character guy, but that we (you and I) really don't know that...What we do know is that the NFL and the Fins did a thorough background check on him, and feel that he is genuine in paying off his debt to society and correcting the behavior that caused the issue in the first place. They may be wrong, only time will tell. Sometimes young men make mistakes (falling into the wrong crowd, etc) and these guys have their lives pretty much controlled by the football coaches and athletic departments when in a big-time program. They often feel they can get away with things and the coach will fix it with the law if I get caught...well it didn't work that way for Elam...we have to give him the benefit of the doubt that he has learned something from this and has changed is ways...lets see how things go...heck, he may not even make the team...before we crucify him.

Saban: Troubled Elam deserves a look

Nick Saban believes giving a college free agent who is trying to overcome a troubled past the chance to play for the Dolphins is more important than any negative publicity the franchise may receive with Monday's signing of safety Abram Elam.

A former standout at Cardinal Newman High, Elam was one of four Notre Dame football players charged with sexually assaulting a female student in March 2002. Elam was the only one of the four convicted of any charges, receiving an 18-month suspended sentence, two years probation and 200 hours of community service as the sentence for felony sexual battery. Elam was acquitted on charges of conspiracy to commit rape and criminal deviate conduct.
