Heres a list of free agents that the fins passed up on this past offseason that definitlely would hav made our weak spots look alot better. Even by picking up one of these many talented free agents could maybe make our record 3-1, rather than 1-3. Saban did a bad job by not picking any of these guys up...

Secondary

Nate Clements
R.W. McQuarters
Charles Woodson
DeShea Townsend
Ike Taylor
Jerry Azumah
Ricky Manning
Terry Cousin
Ty
Law
Adam Archuleta
Corey Chavous
Idrees Bashir
Lance Schulters
Will Demps

O-Line
Steve Hutchinson
Tom Ashworth
Todd Steussie
Mike Pearson
Wayne Hunter
Makoa Freitas
Jon Runyan
Kevin Mawae
Larry Allen
Lecharles Bentley
OLB
Lavar Arrington
Shawn Barber
Peter Boulware
Chris Clemons
Willie Mcginest
Sam Cowart
Na'il Diggs

The list can go on and on!! Im sure im leaving people out, but the point is that we passed up on all these guys, even to sign one of these guys would have helped us out bigtime... I love Saban and what hes done with the team, but how do u not sign any of these guys?!?!

you can not get every free agent out there. this is not baseball, football has a salary cap and you have to manage your roster to have a balance of stars and role players.

Im not saying everyone of them, Im saying just one!!! ONE!!!

Most of those guys you mentioned came in for visits but chose other teams......

The offensive line had played well together and did not need any tinkering. The secondary certainly did need work with Madison's departure. If you ask me, the secondary has been overachieving so far and has been a pleasant surprise given who they are. We've been fortunate in that we haven't played anybody with a particularly potent passing offense (Houston has been the best passing offense we've faced).

I understand what you're saying, but ONE player would still not have made a difference. They need several impact players and as another poster pointed out, you can only do so much under the cap.

Well a bunch of those guys were RFA's, alot immediatly choose other teams for other reasons, a few we brought in and they choose another team, some don't fit out system, and alot we just were not interested in. On top of that we didn't have too much cap space to play with this year. What kind of point are you trying to make here? This isn't Madden, you don't just bid on every player you've heard of before. Saban is bulding a team that can be competative now and in the future, it's not an overnight process. We're executing and coming together better every week. This team has had alot of roster turnover and these guys need to learn how to win together. All this negativity is ridiculous, we're 4 weeks into the season and have shown improvement each week. I'll be waiting to say I told you so when all these "questionable" moves start to work.

yeh some of them just flat-out chose other teams. In some cases. we're better off that they did. Bentley is gone for the year and Arrington is not up to par.

It's unfair to put guys like Nate Clements up there. Wasn't he franchised by the Bills, so it would have cost a couple of #1 picks to get him?

Saban is just not going to overpay anyone. He's already got us out of salary-cap hell and is moving is in the right direction

Foresight is a great thing. Alot of players came in and chose to play for another team. Main problem was money. We had to let Surtain go and Madison because of the money they would have commanded. Alot of those DB's were asking for the same money. Will Allen hasnt shone but he isnt a Howard either. Jason Allen has yet to show up.
We will be letting go next off-season a few more top-end salary players but until then weve got to settle with what weve got. I want to see a younger D next season and the one after with the Draft.

This is an excellent post and one of the best ones I've read in a while. I hope alot of the fans on here read this especially "Saban is bulding a team that can be competative now and in the future, it's not an overnight process."

I dont think enough people realize this since the expectations were set to damn high this year. Well thought out post!

guess what, even with the minimal talent we acquired, we have less salary cap room than anyone, which means, odds of getting anyone decent on that list are slim. And half of those guys on your list would not have improved this team.

I believe by the end of the year you will have a different opinion about this offseason, but time will tell. Is your opinion influenced by unreasonable expectations for this season? Finally, there are a lot of games left to play. It is not over until it is over.
