2) Take over control of some of the offensive play-calling.
Using Frerotte in a vertical offense is putting a square peg in a round hole. Sure he's got a great arm, but he isn't accurate enough to hit the plays necessary to score points or to at least possess the ball long enough to keep the defense off the field.
If Saban does neither, he's doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, which is the definition of "crazy." Sage may do no better than Frerotte, but at least we wouldn't be expecting different things out of the same guy.
