Palm beach post reports:

OAKLAND, Calif.  Coach Nick Saban did something Sunday that he hasn't done during a game all season: He gave offensive coordinator Scott Linehan a high-five.

For the first time, Linehan called plays from the sideline rather than from the coaches' skybox during the Dolphins' 33-21 win against the Oakland Raiders. The move allowed for increased communication between Linehan and his players, a decision that appears to have worked out well.

Might have been posted but I found that very intersesting.

It was posted before. The decision was a good one by Saban and I hope that Leinhan stays on the sidelines.

yeah this was a good move on Sabans part..i think it helps Gus out so he can talk to him on the sidelines instead of on the phone and whatnot

I see no reason that whatever advantage he has from sitting way up in the press box can't be trasnmitted down to the field from a internal network cam. I hope he stays on the sideline too.

The way I read it in the Herald, it was Linehan who brought it up to Saban.

Has anyone even sene the phones at Oakland Coliseum? They look like they belong in a museum. No Wonder Linehan decided he should just stay down on the field. He would have had betterluck with two cans and a string than use those old rotary phones Miami would have had to use.

I guess if we win out the reat of our games then every OC in the NFL will move down to the sidelines too....lol

Agreed, I never could understand why they did this. It makes so much more sense to have all the coaches on the sidelines with the team, and it sets a much better example for the team.

Not just that, but it also gives that face to face coaching...that mentoring and teaching that players need from their coaches. Talking on a telephone just isn't the same.

Well there are advantages to both.
Why the coaches are up in the booth is simple, they can see the entire field and can immediately see strengths and weaknesses in the opposing defense from that vantage point. Because of that they can make adjustments and quick play calls based on opportunities they see the defense giving the team. They would not be able to make such adjustments as quickly having to study a field cam on the sideline and if they are sitting there reviewing that cam the whole time they won't be interacting with the players anyway.

Well put, I would never have thought of that. Though I would still think it to be slightly more beneficial to be up close an personal with the team nonetheless.

yeah. im sure the fins have some coaches up there that are marking tendencies and sending them down.

my impression of linehan is that he starts playing madden up there. it seems pretty clear that going down on the field gives him a better feel for each team for the physical matchups. its what he needed.

charlie wiess was always on the field, wasnt he?
