(On how he can develop chemistry with Joey Harrington and Chris Chambers on the outside) – “We try to develop with anybody outside, not just Chris. That’s something that we need to continue to do is make more explosive plays vertically in the passing game. We’ve talked about that quite a bit. Even the ones that we had in this particular game were short balls that ended up getting thrown and we actually ran for big plays. We still need to continue to work and develop that vertical passing game of throwing the ball down the field. I think Joey’s making improvement in that area. I think he’s getting more and more comfortable with our guys. Hopefully, that will be the next part of his confidence that grows so we can take advantage of some of the skill guys that we have.â€Â

Looks like Saban knows what to do and hopefully he's right about Joey's improvement with the long ball. And it seems to me he's trying to groom Harrington with all the improvement and that measured confidence boosting.

(On if he’s been contacted by the University of Alabama) – “No, I haven’t. I don’t care to be. I don’t want to be. I have a job to do here. My focus is on our players, this team, us getting better, and us playing good, winning football here. I’m not interested in any other circumstances or situations anyplace else. Mike Shula is a good guy. He’s a friend. I hate to see anybody not being able to maintain. I think he’s done a good job there and should have been given an opportunity to stay there.â€Â

And also puts the Alabama business to rest. Hmm, I wonder if Mike Shula would be interested in a certain offensive coordinator spot here...

He does seem to have more interest in grooming Harrington, as opposed to getting Culpepper back out there these days. When was the last time he said anything about Culpepper's rehab? That was all he was concerned with in the beginning was wanting to get Culpepper out there as soon as possible and downplaying the benching with the Culpepper is our guy stuff. Now Daunte's not even at practice today and all Saban talks about anymore is Harrington's improvement.

It's like a total reversal of the early stages of the QB switch. You can't help but wonder what's running through Saban's mind at this point in time.

It certainly does seem to be that Saban's taking on Harrington as a possible project. It's too bad Saban wasn't around to be Harrington's first coach otherwise, things could've been a lot different for Joey, whose growth as a player was pretty must stunted in Detroit.

bluehaze I know you're the ultimate Joey fanboy and that's cool, but if you are reading this statement and coming up with that, man you are reaching hard bro lol. You just said it yourself, Daunte wasn't there. And this is a postgame PC, why would he talk about Daunte? He said Daunte wasn't there and was at a doctor's visit or something.

If anything I saw some criticism in the statement, i.e. lack of deep plays. He said not just Chambers, he wants Joey to click up with anyone. He even brought up what some of us Joey critics saw, that the only deep passes were short passes and YAC.

I'm certainly not a mind-reader, so I can't tell you Saban's opinions, but it doesn't surprise me that he's focusing on Harrington and much less Culpepper. Seeing as how Harrington is the guy that is QBing the Dolphins right now, I can see how he'd want to develop Harrington into a better player.

I suppose the Harringtonphiles will infer that that means Joey will supplant Culpepper, but my guess is that (as of now) this development is primarily just for the rest of this year and not necessarily for grooming Joey as a permanent starter.

Just my $0.02

Couldn't agree more.

I also think he's talking about the deep ball because he wants the Jaguars to respect the deep ball and not have too many defenders in the box. We need to get our running game going early and with Ronnie Brown out it might be wise to tell our opponent to watch out for the long completions to make it easier to run.

Indeedly so. It will be a long 3 hours if the Fins can't get the passing game working (in order to keep Jacksonville honest and set up the run).

Or it could be a hint that Mularky should stop the sideways crap and get the ball downfield. I think this is one reason why Chambers is lacking something. He is being asked to catch sideways passes way too much.

So every time Saban even talks about Joey or doesn't talk about Daunte, we have to turn it into another Joey vs. Daunte thread? Why can't the thread just be about Saban's plans for the team, Joey or otherwise? Note: I know that's what the thread was started for, but of course bluehaze and jdang hijacked it - just so you know I'm not criticizing what STARTED as a good thread.

I read that the opposite of the JH fan boys as well. It seems to me he's saying 'we have the skill players to catch the ball deep but our QB hasn't got it done despite the fact that we talk about it quite a bit. Hopefully, he'll figure it out.'

Hopefully we see some glimmer of hope that we can complete passes downfield.
