Saban's contract could bring congressional inquiry

It's funny how most of the quotes in this article are from:

LSU athletics director Skip Bertman

A little pissed that Saban went to a conference rival, maybe?

As much as I hate Saban right now but frankily who gives a crap if college coaches are making good money. The NCAA and college scholls make so much money and the kids get none of that. Its about time smebody besides the schools get paid..

Good job Saban...Now because of you're pathetic ways and childish nature...and huge contract, congress will be looking into stripping the college's of tax-exempt status...Another bite right to your A**...Good job, hope your proud little boy

Our boys are dying in Iraq, gas prices still out of control
and our government is worried about coaches wages!!

Like everything else having to do with Congress, this is strictly an opportunity for some face time on TV. Nothing will come of this.

Besides, the boosters are picking up the bulk of the tab on this one. It's not like the university itself is shelling out all of those bucks.

Only the athletic departments if I understand it correctly. IMO thats the way it should be. Alumni donate millions of dollars to college athletic departments and are able to write it off on their taxes, and the athletic depts dont pay any kind of income tax on it. The tax revenue that would have been generated from that money has to be made up from somewhere so guess where it comes from? So, the claim that the athletic departments are not funded by tax revenues is not entirely accurate. Personally, I don't like the idea that at least in a roundabout way, my tax dollars are being used to fund these outrageous salaries.
Keep donations to academics tax free, but make the alum pay taxes on the money they donate to the athletic depts...or, at least make the athletic department pay income tax on the money they receive, both in donations and in ticket sales.

this is exactly right! I agree that the athletic departments, particularly at big BCS schools, should not be tax free. Its absurd that people can get tax breaks when these programs produce so much revenue in bowl games, tv profit sharing, etc. Congress should act on this.

...Revenues from donations, sales, tickets, concessions, etc...i suppose should all be taxable...The bottom line i suppose is that these are all revenues and income for the school. There should be no reason for a coach to get paid 5 million a year from a not for profit..Also a not-for-profit that is recieving income of 105million a year should also be taxed...Unless the income is used to build buildings, purchase books, etc...

You people need to friggin relax. The government was already looking into stripping the status from schools.:shakeno:

They should be worried, the tax-exempt status prevents the government from getting taxes to afford the Iraq war (and some other things).
