Saban quote
"He does it really well [in] 7-on-7 [and] when he is not getting the wet knocked out of him," said Saban, referring to his team's spotty pass protection in the past two games. "That is a confidence issue, too, based on the people around you. He has not probably thrown the ball as accurately in the last two games, but he has also gotten bounced around more."

Let me get this straight. Frerotte is the starter because he does well in practice especially 7 on 7 drills??

There are coaches that don't base their decitions on practise?

well...I wonder how Sage does on 7 on 7? I guess he wants to stick with Gus for another week to see if he can go back and perform better with better pass protection. Me...i thought his protection wasnt as bad as Saban thinks, several of those throws were terrible when he did have time.

Yeah, what the heck. I thought coaches were supposed to decide who starts by reading the papers.

hehe

What if your backups show many signs of sucking in practice, then you have a problem, don't you?

Well you don't know if the backup is different in game situations until you play him do you??

I am pretty good on the driving range most days.... sometimes I can take it to the course.... sometimes I can't.... still can't figure it out.

  • First.... let's assume Saban, the staff and players want to win.
  • Second....lets all assume they know a great deal more about what is really going on than anyone on this board.
  • Third.... just relax and know that it affects them more than any of us and let them play the games.
  • There's a lot of football left.... 12 teams have records the same or worse than us and 11 of those teams have yet to win on the road, just like us.

That is a very interesting statement.

So getting bounced around, or getting the wet knocked out of you alot can effect your accuracy and give you confidence issues??

Even for a veteran who's got 12 years in the league...hmmm....I wonder how playing behind the worst offensive line in the history of the Miami Dolphins would effect a QB playing as a starter for the first time in his career..:hmmm:....

/just thinking out loud

Isn't this the same article I've read 3 or 4 times in the paper?....Same article, in the Orlando Sentinel.....Gee I didn't know they reprint articles that often.
And I guess Saban doesn't know this is a repeat of the Wanny-Fieldler story.

Can we have a quiz here? Why is Sage Rosenfels not starting?

1. He's dumb as a rock?
2. He hasn't studied the playbook?
3. He's too tall?
4. He's too short?
5. He might suceed and show up #l
6. It might hurt OC's feelings?

If you don't have the answer, you're allowed to guess.

Practice is really all these coaches have to go with. I always laughed when people said, "AJ Feeley plays much better in games than he does in practice." Could you imagine being the head coach, watching this guy throw 8 INT's, which he did in one practice, and telling your coaching staff and team, "don't worry guys he plays much better in games than he does in practice. This has been well documented since his days in Philly." I don't know about you guys but if I were a player or assistant coach I would think the head man was an idiot and this guy should practice better if he wants to play.

Gus, as you said, is a 12-year veteran. He's played behind good lines and bad lines. Oddly enough, as it is, Miami is ranked 5th in the league in total sacks allowed. But here, people are basically saying our line is something like Houston's, which has allowed one sack every 4 pass attempts. Miami is currently ranked 7th in the league, with one sack every 21.9 pass attempts. Gus, not being mobile, isn't helping much. This means one thing: the line actually IS pass protecting.

Gus, being 28th in the league in passer rating while being 7th in sacks allowed, clearly has some more issues besides pass protection. His inherent lack of talent is obviously a problem. My point is there are teams like Pittsburgh and Dallas - ranked near the bottom in sacks allowed - that have quarterbacks near the top in passer rating. In fact, there are a lot of quarterbacks under more pressure with a better rating.

No, most quarterbacks do not do well when they're under heavy pressure or getting hit. However, Gus has been under relatively little pressure. Those of us who don't blindly defend everything Saban does, including sticking with a tired old mediocre veteran, can see that Frerotte has had time to make tea on occasion and still throws horrible passes.

Worst offensive line in the history of the Miami Dolphins? Maybe last year, when Miami was 28th in sacks allowed and 32nd in rushing yards per carry. This year, the Dolphins are 7th in adjusted sacks allowed and 4th in rushing yards per carry. What's worse is that out of 10 sacks, 6 of them came on either the last possession or the second-last possession in our four losses. These situations always skew the sack numbers.

The quarterback is the problem. Deal with it.

Sorry, just "thinking out loud."

Well, you sure missed the point on that one...

I wasn't referring to gus frerotte, I was in my own way, referring to what AJ Feeley went through last year and how most fans dismissed exactly what Saban is saying is effecting gus.

Whether it is effecting gus or not, I guess only you know but, I don't particularly care about that. I was more interested in the statement as it applies to Feeley.

Sorry to make you waste a good rant....

:chuckle:

No, but your initial post would certainly support that.

Thank you, come again.
