Do they still suck?

Man, I couldnt believe some of the comments we were seeing during our losing streak.. People here have the patience of gnat. Declaring the entire 2006 draft a bust before any of them ever really stepped onto the field..

Truth is, our 2005 draft was above average for sure.. and 2006 is still a question mark, but with alot of hope and promise... Heck, we might even get 2 starting DTs from it down the road...

Hopefully this game will show people that Saban's drafts arent Wannstedtian...

2005 we've got 2 starters this year (Daniels would be a third had he not been battling injuries), Vickerson could start next year, and Alabi will also get a look to start.

2006 IMO Saban looked more to a quick fix due to our late season success last year (ie trading our 2nd for Daunte, and we did not have a 5th or 6th round pick). Allen has shown some playmaking ability in recent weeks, and I like Hagan (and I wish we'd use him more). The Toledo pick I did not like, but the jury is out on him. Evans impressed me in pre-season, and Rod Wright could prove to be a steal. But again, hard to have a good draft when half of your picks are 7th rounders.

This year I think we can have a good draft as long as we don't look for the quick fix.

What? What the hell is a voice of reason doing on the main board?!!:D Skapephin, you couldn't be more correct. My gut feeling is that this draft is going to be regarded as a top notch draft in 5 years. Two good DTs, our starting anchor at safety position, starting right guard. The jury will be whether Daunte recovers or not. That will determine whether it's a good or great draft

I'm not one of the Vickerson faithful on this board. I think our two draft picks this year will pass Vickerson on the depth chart sooner than later and we'll have to cut Vickerson, not because he's not good, but because it's becoming a real position of strength and depth on our team.

Saban is drafting for the FUTURE, not this season, but down the line, which is when we should review his drafts, down the line, not now.

Grade a draft after the end of the second year of the draft class at the EARLIEST. More preferably after the third year. I would not agree that Saban was necessarily looking for a quick fix after last year as someone else alluded to.

Daunte Culpepper was not an attempt at a quick fix? He'll be 31 next year. Does that sound like a young QB with a bright future of uphill performance? C'mon.

One can take that position. But, IMHO Saban was thinking this guy may have 3 to 4 good seasons left even with the injury. In today's NFL, unfortunately, 3-4 years is not a short period in a career as anything can change. The slippery slope is that it does take a while to accurately analyze rookies till two or three years. But with vets at least you know more about what you are getting...usually.

There are qbs that can be effective till age 35 and some beyond. Saban took a gamble that Culpepper was one of those qbs. His comeback status was not well analyzed and obviously he cut short his rehab too soon. So far it just has not worked out. However, not necessarily a quick fix...just my .02 worth.

I still am unhappy with the drafts. You have to throw Manny Wright, Culpepper, Roth, Ronnie Brown, and OF COURSE Jason Allen as being parts of dissapointing drafts.

EVERY SINGLE PERSON you listed can still come in and be HIGHLY EFFECTIVE for us.. Roth is behind Pro Bowlers.. Culpepper, when healthy, is an elite QB. Manny Wright is a disruptive force and there is still hope that he comes back to us once he straightens out his head.. In the only action Jason Allen has seen all year he comes up with some great pass defenses and an INT.

And, Ronnie Brown... HOW THE **** CAN YOU SAY HE HAS BEEN A DISSAPOINTMENT!?

I too can not see how RB can be seen as a disappointment. Give him holes and he will produce. Also, this fan think that Jason Allen has a bright future. He and Roths' time will come as being solid contributors. Just a humble opinion.

do any of you think roth will start next year i hope so

If we don't resign Holliday I can see either Roth or Carter moving to DT.

Really Roth has been playing pretty well this year. He's not getting sacks, but as Boomer and CK have said, he's playing CE (Closed End) in our defense which is basically a run stopper. Roth has made a lot of great plays in the running game.
