Sage Rosenfels on the 2004 Dolphins and Coaching Changes

I almost cried... Literally... when the 49ers drafted Alex Smith ahead of us. It was the beginning of my recognition of satan as the antichrist of a coach he turned out to be. Coming back with the brown pick instead of rodgers told me a little about the man and it only got worse. Brees. cam. tuna. soprano. henne.

NEVER have a defensive-minded coach as a HC. Ever Ever Ever. (cf. "Zook, Ron" and "Muschamp, Will")

Shula was a defensive back and defensive coordinator before becoming a head coach. Bill Bellichick was a defensive coordinator before becoming a head coach.
You logic is flawed.

Just an underlying lesson i realized reading this article, For as miserable as Tony Sparano was as a coach after 2008 he remained professional and continued to work hard irregardless of the situation. Sparano now has another crack at head coaching in the NFL. The guy who slashed his throat from behind to cover his own squanders is nowhere to be found and likely won't have a meaningful job again in the NFL. Says a lot about how far professionalism and how you treat others will take you in life.

If i remember correctly Aaron Rodgers dropped like a rock all the way to the 20's. We were not the only team to pass on him. At the time the choice was Ronnie Brown , Cadillac Williams or Alex Smith. At least that's what the draftnics were saying. Ronnie was a solid player but in hind sight we should have traded back and got some extra picks then picked Rodgers.
Many thought Rodgers was not ready. Green Bay had Brett so they had time to develop him.
You are correct. Rodgers dropped because scouts had a problem with his delivery or arm strength lol. You also can't forget that it was a weak draft and teams wouldn't of traded up because of the guaranteed money you had to pay the #2 pick at the time.

Totally forgot Marc Trestmen was the QB coach. Another fools errand for letting him go

Keep in mind we had Ricky quit the year before and had nothing at RB. Sabin was all about good defense and a strong running game.
It's easy to look back and say could have should have.

At least we did not use a 2nd rounder to trade up for Ronnie like we did with Jordan:idk:

Even if u have a need you don't take a guy like Brown that high. More taking a player off pure potential and not enough evidence to support it.

way too early so say that. Parcells did lot of shady things including talking about Bucs job behind his back and still had no issue getting a job. Ireland will get a job again just wont be handed the GM job

Great article.. Painful memories, but a very good read. Thanks for posting!

I had hoped that Wayne would hire Bates because I felt he got the team back on track when they could have easily folded given what the expectations were and what transpired. I liked Jim and was deeply disappointed he was let go. Though we can't rewrite history I can't help but think had Jim been named coach where would we be today, particularily at the QB position.

Good read. I like Sage and the insight he brings to the game.

I liked Jim too but not as our HC. That wouldn't have lasted and and we would've turned against him also. And it's not like he's been tearing it up as a HC somewhere else in the NFL. And I think it was the right decision being that he didn't have any other teams lining him up

Back then many on this board were very outspoken about him not having a bigger role. Not me though, I didn't know who he was except for here.

That whole situation at OC was a fiasco.

Joel Collier was initially named OC (not a bad choice) but he resigned before the season because Wanny wouldn't let him run the offseason how he wanted to run it and went back to RB coach. So instead of promoting Trestman or our WR coach Jerry Sullivan (who was a pretty good WR coach) we promoted Chris Foerster who had just come on as a TE coach and was nowhere near ready to call plays.

I also remember the rumors being that the offensive staff hated each other as some wanted to open up the passing game while others wanted to stay with power running.

True but many thought Rodgers needed a few years seasoning before he would be ready to start. Sabin was in the win now mod and had Gus Ferrotte plus Ronnie had ran over his team in SEC play so really i don't think they were looking at Rodgers. Our mistake
Could have been worst. We could have taken Cadillac the three game wonder.

Nearly all rookies QBs need time...by I was on the Rogers bandwagon that year....the Miami Dolphins failure is that they weren't.
