Wallace will count $17,2M with a $15M salary this year but, counted $3.2M with a $1M salary last year.

Ellerbe will count $7.4M with a $6M salary this year but, counted $2.4 with a $1.4M salary last year

Wheeler will count $6.4M with a $5M salary this year but, counted $3.4M with a $1.4M salary last year.

The point is simple. All three took minimal money in their first year, and are now averaging it out in their second year. Not many players wold do this to that extent.

In no way can anyone look at this years money paid to them without considering how little they took last year.

The team carried over $18M in cap space, and this is due mostly to the three taking a lot less in their first year. This allowed Ireland to go with one year deals for Clabo, Grimes, etc BUT, he did not take the advantage far enough on the OL. Otherwise, he would still be here.

Interesting info....thanks for sharing!

The signing bonus is the key as Wallace got an $11M check last year as a signing bonus. That amount is prorated over the years of the contract which can help if managed well.

There was no need to carry over the money , would have been smart to pay them in that first season. Any player would do that because the money is in the bonus and guarantees. Half of Wallaces contract is guaranteed.
Ellerbee has 14 million guaranteed. Wheeler 13 million guaranteed. Lets quit acting like these were some genius contracts. Would have been smarter to pay Wallace more in his first year than having a 17 million dollar hit this year. The point is they didn't take some small amount. Ellerbee is being paid like one of the best MLB's in football basically Jerard Mayo type money to be a very average to below average player. Wallace is one of the top paid receivers in the NFL to be performing like a good receiver.

Back to your point about what these players took, its all in the bonus and guarantees and none of these players took less than they could have got elsewhere so its all moot

Yea no matter how he plays he is guaranteed 30 million dollars on that contract

Paying them last year of this year means nothing to the team. I've seen many contracts over the years, and few players have taken so little in the first year. CK and I had this discussion last off season, where he pointed out that there is normally a 25% discount in FA's first year, which was accurate.

Wheeler wasn't worth the $1.4M. yet alone the $5M committed this year. Ireland's big failure in this was assessing Wheeler's real value. When Jeff is chatting with his loyal buddy Mando, (who might just need another source now JI has left the building), he should reflect upon Wheeler's contribution and his haste to sign him as one of his bigger mistakes in his final year in Miami. In the exciting early days of Free Agency, our own CKParrothead immediately flagged his major concerns with the Wheeler signing and flagged why he didn't understand it and why it would fail. Some of us said, let's see what we have before being we get too concerned, but CK was right and the career personnel professionals within the Miami organization, thought they knew better. Wheeler was a known commodity who had been in the NFL for a number of years in Indy and then Oakland. This was not an unknown emerging from college. It is also interesting to note that Dion Jordan's best buddy and teammate at Oregon was Kiko Alonso. Presumably many invested a lot of time analyzing the Oregon Defense videos, to have liked Jordan so much to move up. Maybe someone could have noticed the potential in Kiko, a finalist in the rookie of the year.

Paying them last year would mean they wouldn't be paid so much this year. In what way was this an advantage? We carried over 18 million in cap but pay more in cap for them this year.
Paying them so low the first year just means they have more left to pay on the books every other year. either way in reality it did nothing to help the team cap wise. If we were tight against the cap last year yes it would have made sense. These guys all got top level contracts with plenty guaranteed please explain what advantage this was to the team. I mean big deal Wallace had a low cap number year one. Year two its 17 million, year three its 12 million. Same with ellerbee this year its 7.4 million and next year oh joy its basically 10 million 9.85 to be exact. Maybe Im missing your point but what exactly does any of this gain us. If we had paid more in their first year we would have less salary cap hits later on so therefore no advantage to these contracts.

It gave Ireland the flexibility to sign other players, which he did not take advantage of. So,bottom line, it did not matter but, it shoulda, coulda.

Wheeler and Ellerbe will be good to VG this coming season, and I would be willing to wager on that happening>
