With the limited FA money available due to the current SNAFU, how can we justify bringing in yet ANOTHER 30-something D-Lineman? (See Holliday, Carter, Zgonina, Traylor)

Let's look at these guys, and throw in Bowens while we're at it, as he'll be 29 this year:
Holliday - 36 tackles, 5 sacks, $1.91 Million against the cap
Carter - 35 tackles, 6 sacks, $5.40 Million against the cap
Zgonina - 23 tackles, 2 sacks, $0.89 Million against the cap
Traylor - 22 tackles, 2 sacks, $0.90 Million against the cap
Bowens - 16 tackles, 3 sacks, $2.15 Million against the cap

Zgonina and Traylor can be kept for low cap impact, but Holliday, Carter & Bowens count for 9.46 Million! It's been awhile since Carter was worth 5 1/2 Million.

Here's an idea, cut:
Carter (33)- $5.40 Million
Frerotte (35)- $4.68 Million
Howard (29)- $4.00 Million
James (29)- $3.20 Million
Booker (30)- $3.10 Million
Bowens (29)- $2.15 Million
Holliday (30)- $1.91 Million

Cut em all, free up another 24 1/2 Million in cap space, and then there's room to bring in some key FA's & the rookies.

I just want to make sure we get:
1. A Free Agent AND a 1st-DAY QB
2. A Free Agent AND a 1st-ROUND OL
3. A Free Agent OR a 3rd or 4th-Round WR

As far as the Defense goes, there's so many possible scenarios I'm not even going to get into it now. We need to restock at virtually every position, and I'm sure Saban will get the right personnel.

Our crying need is on Offense, not chasing another over-the-hill D-Lineman.
:dolphins:
P.S. - Say NO to T.O. His salary will keep us from signing 3 or 4 other guys and he will be a headache for this whole city until he leaves on bad terms.

we can't afford to be without a NT
What a verbose reply.

He may be an improvement, but it's a temporary situation and it continues a strategy that just produces metiocre results. The point is that we have a ton of money tied up in guys who aren't worth it.

You wanna bring in Adams for 1-2 years, fine. Keep the contract reasonable, keep the cuts coming, and either draft a high DT next year or hope Wright/Vickerson vastly improve this year and take over in '07.

Adams isn't going to solve our problems. He's a stop-gap measure (catch the witty pun) and we're just going to have to deal with it all over again next year.

Adams could be a good signie, but we can do good without him. I think having two DT's in their middle 30's could cause us some trouble in the new couple of years. That's why we need to have a younger DT to be the other starter besider of Traylor in the defense. This season will likely be Traylor's last and we need to go ahead and groom a replacement for him. Someone like Vickerson or Wright could both be the guys in the future.

Why are you guys getting older and slower?

Plus Adams is no NT. He is a one gap 4-3 DT. Every team that was going to a 3-4 released him because he doesnt fit that defense.

We aren't getting older and slower. But I do think having two old DT's like Traylor and Adams would be a bad idea. Both play kind of similar and Traylor is a better fit for us then what Adams would be. It would be better to have someone like Vickerson or Wright groomed for taking over then to have Adams for only about 1-2 years.

we definately should sign him, no question.
it will be nice to see him swallow up willis mcgahee next year

C'mon guys - if you think Traylor is a load - Adams makes him look like Taylor. He is a WIIIIIDE body. I think you are talking about getting rid of Zgonina(sp?). Now you have a rotation of Traylor, Wright, Adams and Vickerson. You can pair each of the rooks up with a vet. That's a pretty good mix of youth and vets. I don't think he will come as cheap as a Traylor so I don't see him signing though. Maybe Mularkey can convince him this is the place to be. I'm sure he has highly recommended him to Saban for him to be in so fast.

I'll reserve final judgement until Adams actually signs a contract and the terms are revealed. I suspect Saban and Mueller aren't going to offer Adams much more than the veteran minimum, and I suspect Adams won't get much more than that from any other team.

I don't mind if Saban wants to add some aging talent to the roster, as long as it doesn't bust our cap flexibility.

Adams would be a great pick-up. Carter restructured and I still think Zgonina will be released. Saban will make room for him. Regardless of his age he's a great player and would fill in nice at NT.

could you use more words?, even though I understood your excellent point in just 3 sentences

We will likely only keep 1 of Traylor, Zgonina or Adams ....

Clearly not all 3 ....

Best case ... Adams replaces Traylor .... [younger and healthier]

If things work out - we can release Zgonina during camp

experienced NT's are hard to find

we need a guy for the next year or 2 until we get a young one seasoned
