Madison, 31, hasn't registered an interception since picking off two against the Jaguars on Oct. 12, 2003, a span of 36 games.

This is just a blurb from that article above. Wow....its funny how the media...and hype can just make you think somebody is better than he really is....I mean Sam has held his own this year.....but....no interceptions since 03.....36 games ago? wow....in the football world....thats a long long time.
Thoughts?

in this scheme, the CB's are left to fend for themselves as the blitzes come from 7 players. Last year we were decimated with injuries and the whole debacle.

Hes doing pretty well in coverage, and has made some great plays. Interceptions would be nice, but I'll take him saving a TD over it.

I completely agree with that. Sam's done pretty well considering...

I also agree with that. Although an interception would be nice, I'll take him breaking up the play an not giving up a TD.

And did you know that the game when Madiosn didn't play, his replacement, Reggie Howard, picked off a pass? :couch:

Sam aint got the recovery speed to gamble like he used to. I think he even said something to that effect, he was going too much for the INT in 2003, which was a bad season for him. In 2004, he focused on coverage, not turnovers, and performed better then Surtain in coverage by far and away.

He hasnt played badly but I do think he has lost a step and at 31 he will never get it back. That plus his cap # and his poor tackling are why I think he will be moved in the offseason.

Interceptions are not a very good barometer to measure a cornerback by...I'm more concerned with passes thrown at him, what happened with the pass and passes defensed...

Sam is still a damn good player. I'll support and defend the guy until he is a liabilty....he is FAR from that right now.

he isnt a player that makes plays for us

He is solid at coverage but has alotta penalties and makes no INTs

we gotta think how long shoudl we hold onto this guy

Sam has always renegotiated his deal when he's been asked to....and he will again.

As for his tackling....he's ALWAYS been a poor tackler. I am not concerned about his tackling. He's paid to COVER...if our corners are the ones making all the tackles then we have bigger issues then their inabilty to tackle.

Dosnt this D require that you have good tackling corners though? My concern is that even if he does have an ok year that at 31 you never know when the botum is going to fall out. I would rather get some value for him after the year (if we can) than hold on to him untill he realy tanks, which could very well be next year. Once you start losing a step as a corner...

What value does he have in trade? We'd be lucky to get a 5th rounder for the guy PLUS we'd get nailed with a cap hit.

His contract runs through 2007...he'll redo his deal this offseason and finish his contract.

Yes, tackling is important for corners in Saban's defense, in fact ALL defenses. That being said ability to COVER means more then ability to tackle as a corner.

Sam can still cover his *** off...he's the LEAST of our concerns on defense. Just like T. Buckley was a mentor for Pat and Sam. Sam will be the same for Travis and Will.

 Sam has been fending for himself for years, including his best years.
