My case against Champ Bailey for Defensive Player of the Year.

I hope the decision makers take this into account.

Champ’s interceptions came against:

1 - Steve McNair (16/12)
1 - Andrew Walter (3/13)
1 - Charlie Frye (10/17)
2 - Ben Roethlisberger (18/23)
1 - Matt Hasselbeck (18/15)
2 - Matt Leinart (11/12)
1 - Carson Palmer (28/13)
1 - Alex Smith (16/16)

7 of 10 interceptions came against notorious INT tossers, at least where this season is concerned.

That's not really valid, do you want all of Taylor's sacks and plays analyzed in that way?

JT should win, but if not him then Bailey. The West Coast steroid junkie should be ineligible....

Why shouldn't quality of competition (in this case QBs) be considered?

I think of it sort of like this: If you and I were bowling side by side, and my gutter guards were up and I won, is that fair? There are things that should be put into consideration. SURE, Taylor's sacks and INTs and Forced fumbles, who was blocking him, etc. should be considered.

I'm gonna be honest, I'll be disappointed of JT doesn't win, but I won't feel like he got robbed if it's Champ Bailey. Bailey is hands down the best corner in football, hands down. I actually think you'd be hard-pressed to find many people to even toss up with him. Especially now that corners can't even look at receiver's the wrong way without getting flagged, Bailey is still a shut-down corner.

He played two of the top three receivers in the league for yardage this year in Chad Johnson and Marvin Harrison, he locked up with both and Chad had 3 receptions for 32 yards, Harrison had 5 for 38, neither scored, neither really factored much into the game. That's dominance. I love Jason Taylor, but Champ Bailey is definitely not undeserving.

I sure hope JT wins it, but sometimes comparing numbers are unfair. Do you have a list teams broken out with JT's sacks and INT's? Were those teams powerhouses with great offensive lines, qb's?

I agree that Champ is also deserving of the award. I think JT's got it won IMO, but Champ DOES deserve it too.

With regard to interceptions, I don't think it matters. JT shouldn't be getting any (DE) and certainly shouldn't be returning them for touchdowns every time, or for 51 yards EVER!

Qbs he's sacked:

Brett Favre
Chad Pennington (D'Brickashaw Ferguson?)
Tom Brady (Matt Light?)
JP Losman (Jason Peters?)
David Garrard
Brad Johnson (Bryant McKinnie?)
David Carr

I don't know if this kind of evaluation is the same.

I guess if you can prove that the tackles JT worked to get to the Quarterback allowed a ton of sacks, then they'd be as close to even as you can get in a comparison of such different positions.

Regardless, I believe JT did more this year, even though I feel Champ is likely the best Corner to ever play the game (much more complete than Deion).

Bailey is a quality player. Most of his INTS have been in the endzone. The guy plays the ball not the player. He is a gamewinner. Sorry but i think hes up there for consideration to win it. Ask any Denver fan what they think of Champ Bailey. I dont think you have much to worry about to be honest because i still think JT will win it. He will be only second Defensive player to win it coming from a losing team (Cortez Kennedy i think is only other player) JT deserves it. Hes played lights out for this Franchise.

JT definately deserves it, Champ is a great player too but JT is THE stand out defensive player. He is electric and charges the team. The juicer shouldn't even be eligble, he can go hang with Satan.

Jason Taylor will win it, in my opinion, because he's more disruptive just by virtue of his position than Champ Bailey can be. Worst case scenario with Champ he takes away your best receiver. I think what makes Champ so good, and deserving as well, is that your Worst Case is pretty much always the reality with him, your best receiver isn't going to have much luck at all against Champ, but as you saw in the Colts game when Reggie Wayne devoured Darrent Williams (God rest his soul, that's not a slight at Darrent) Champ can play lights out and the passing game can still beat Denver.

Jason Taylor you have to game plan for. He's disruptive against the run and the pass. He can beat double teams, he's got speed and agility far superior to the average D-End, and he can make that game changing play. He forced 10 fumbles and had 2 picks this year. And that's not counting the number of times he batted down a screen pass. Jason Taylor wins more because of how many ways he does hurt you, though I think honestly Champ Bailey is still pretty worthy.

im not sure of the exact numbers, but with something like 10 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions, and about 5 or 6 passes defended,..... i mean come on thats too good... he leads the league in forced fumbles im sure of that

I think JT deserves to win, but Bailey is right up there as well.

They're both very cool, quality, team guys & probably the best players at their respective positions...

It's funny how they both spoke out about Merriman. This award means a lot to both of them apparently...

:dolphins:

Yeah Champ deserves it as much as JT does....IMO maybe a little more.

I don't understand why you would overanalyze his INTs like this.
