the last two versions, he had us picking Rey Maualuga in the top ten and now, with the 12th pick....

MIAMI DOLPHINS: BRIAN ORAKPO, DE, TEXAS

Scouting Report

After using the #1 overall pick on Jake Long to shore up the offense last year the Dolphins and Bill Parcells can now turn their attention to the defense with their top pick in 2009. No matter where he has been Parcells has used early picks on impact linebackers, whether

it was Carl Banks with the Giants, Willie McGinest in New England, James Farrior with the Jets or DeMarcus Ware with the Cowboys, and that trend continues with this choice. Brian Orakpo is one of college football's true "Workout Warriors" and according to ESPN the Magazine he has just 8 percent body fat, bench presses 515 pounds, power cleans 380 pounds, runs the forty in 4.6 seconds and has a 42-inch vertical jump. Orakpo also gets the job done on the field though and a spectacular senior campaign has sent him shooting up draft boards around the league. Joey Porter has remerged as a Pro Bowler in 2008 but they could use an upgrade opposite him and Orakpo would be a nice fit. The Dolphins could also use some help at wide receiver and a top-notch cornerback but knowing the Tuna he would probably have a difficult time passing up guys like Orakpo and Rey Maualuga.

first off... why 12th ? i have a very hard time with this especially when he thinks Atlanta will end up with the 21st pick... anyways, everyone is entitled to his own opinion. For my part, i believe we'll draft between the 15th and 20th pick, if that happens, i still see orakpo available. Will we draft him ? I don't know... This regime loves big and physical OLB but orakpo seems like vernon gholston v2.0 to me ... he has better hand moves and technique, but i'm not really high on him as a 3-4 OLB...

I'm not sure if the Dolphins would go with Orakpo. Yeah, he's a physical freak, and a beast in the weight room/workouts. But, like you said Vernon Gholston was in that same mold and he looks like he is well on his way to BUST status. I think the team would go with Greg Hardy if he was still on the board.

I don't get to see a lot of Texas football, but from what I've seen, Orakpo is more of a fluid athlete than Gholston ever was/will be. He might not have the numbers, but Chris Long really didn't take off until the end of his junior season. As far as the Orakpo-Gholston comparison; I think Orakpo is the better athlete, he's more experienced and he's faced a lot more speed on offense than Gholston did in the Big 10. I still like him as the pick if his knee's healthy, mostly because I doubt Hardy would be around by the time Miami picked.

That said, Orakpo's durability concerns me; he's had a frequent knee injury throughout his career. I think Hardy would be my choice if he declares for the draft, and is indeed around when Miami picks, but I think Orakpo is pretty well suited to play SOLB.

I've read an awful lot of guys clamoring about Virginia's Clint Sintim. I guess I could see it if the Dolphins do indeed make the playoffs and are picking mid-late 20's, but the games I've seen, Sintim missed an awful lot of tackles.

It'd still be nice if one of the top-flight CB's landed at our spot, but I have a hunch that we go after Chris Gamble pretty hard in free agency if he's not re-signed, which might be likely since the Panthers have stocked up on CB's in recent years.

I prefer Greg Hardy over Orakpo... realy liked what I saw from Hardy this season from the few Ole Miss games I was able to watch.

I agree with what's been said about Orakpo's injuries, he seems to always get injured.

Well firstly I was speaking about having Miami picking #12 when I said poor job. But as for Orakpo what I said in another thread is he's a projection to putting out there in space as a linebacker. As much as Vernon Gholston was. Even more so, IMO, than Greg Hardy because with Hardy you have actual tape out there of him playing wide receiver, getting off the line of scrimmage, executing wide receiver moves and catching athletic touchdown passes over cornerbacks. Plus he was an All-State basketball player. I think Orakpo played some in high school but I don't think he was that great. And yes, the basketball experience is actually pretty big in these guys' consideration when it comes to moving a guy out into space.

I just don't see that true fluidness in Orakpo's movement, and Boomer and I get worried that in pass rush he's mostly just got a bull rush.

Right now I'd take Sintim over Orakpo. I think Sintim does a fantastic job and he is already asked to do the things regularly that Miami would have him do as a SOLB.

Greg Hardy, he would have to start out slow...basically replacing Charlie Anderson as LDE in our 4-DL setups. Matt Roth would continue to take a lot of snaps at 3-4 OLB. We'd work Hardy into it, and I think eventually he'd be taking over Joey Porter's spot.

CK, saw your post in the other thread as well. Good stuff. English looked alright in the game the other night. I've not seen Ole Miss play - I understand them to be a 4-3 team...I may very well be wrong. Does Hardy drop back in coverage at all?

The thing to keep in mind about Hardy though is there could easily be skeletons in his closet that turn a team, especially a team like the Dolphins, completely off to him. He doesn't have a clean record and he's not the team leader that a Clint Sintim is. Clint Sintim runs that defense, and he's led a resurgence in that defense that has been pretty special to watch after first suffering a few bad performances against USC and UConn as they got use to playing without Chris Long and Jeffrey Fitzgerald.

No, but it's usually much less of a projection with a guy that has so much experience playing basketball and playing wide receiver. You don't worry too much about his movement ability and agility, balance, etc.

Understandable. Makes perfect sense. I'm guessing Sintim does all that pretty well playing in Groh's system. Would he be one in your opinion that might have to add a little weight to set the edge as a SOLB?

hey CK, not to change the thread, but I'd love to hear your opinion on the mock I just recently posted.

As for Mr. Wright, I think he's still very weary of us.

CK, I agree with you...

Hardy's off-field concerns....well...concern me...and probably not something the Dolphin brass would embrace...

Sintim has proven very, very durable throughout his career and the ability to explode off blocks...and he's playing the position, and assuming a lot of the responsibilities he would have in Pasqualoni's system..

Despite Orakpo's injury history, he looks to me as if he gives more effort than Gholston did in college when pursuing ball carriers...doesn't lolligag as much when the opportunity for sacks doesn't present itself.

Also doesn't display an arsenal of pass rush moves...but hasn't needed to either...especially against true freshman left tackles...

I don't know. Maybe. I'm sure this coaching staff would be on him not so much to add weight but to make sure his core strength is always good. When I see him play, I see him setting the edge against double teams on occasion, let alone setting the edge in man. He drops back, he covers, he puts his hand down on the ground and rushes the passer from left end, he rushes and swipes away backs and tight ends that try and deal with him, and he's a smart guy, a team leader. Chris Long thought he had more potential than him and they were good pals.

It makes too much sense to steer toward him given that we maybe ought to be thinking about what to do at SOLB in the long run.

But on the other hand if Greg Hardy's past does check out, you could say to yourself well ok how about we get a guy that can make an impact in pass rush situations and we can bring him along slowly at OLB (because Matt Roth is an asset against the run right now) and eventually, Hardy replaces Joey Porter at weak side.

Have to give some thought to either, really. But, always keep in mind that these guys tend to believe in adding a bunch of those 6'4" to 6'6" and 275 to 330 pound guys to the DL...they truly believe the more of them you have that can move extremely well and affect the passer, the better your team is.

Actually i like the pick he has for us as far as player. I very much doubt Crabtree is there at 7 though. These early mocks are usually pretty useless. I remember seeing john Walsh projected as a top pick one year.
The year we passed on Quinn I know Boomer was very high on Colt brennan as a first round pick. Way too early I basically ignore mocks until after combines.
