MIAMI DOLPHINS: BRIAN CUSHING, OLB, USC
Scouting Report
No matter where he goes Bill Parcells wins and the way he has turned this Dolphins franchise around so quickly might be one of his crowning achievements. There is still work to be done though and Miami has plenty of needs they could address with this pick. When doing mock drafts it’s important to look at history and trends and Parcells has used first round picks on impact linebackers everywhere he has been. Whether it was Carl Banks with the Giants, Willie McGinest in New England, James Farrior with the Jets or DeMarcus Ware with the Cowboys. That is what we call a tendency. Brian Cushing has battled the injury bug for most of his career but when he is healthy the results have been impressive. A bit of a linebacker / defensive end hybrid, Cushing would be a perfect fit in the Dolphins 3-4 defensive scheme and he could play outside or inside for them. In fact, in many ways he is similar to Bobby Carpenter, who Parcells liked enough to use a mid-first round pick on during his time with Dallas. The Dolphins could also use a top cornerback and outside of Ted Ginn they really don’t have anything to get excited about at wide receiver either. Keep a close eye on B.J. Raji too because he would be an ideal fit as their long-term successor to the aging and undersized Jason Ferguson at nose tackle.
i've felt that way about the cushing pick ... he's not excelling at one precise thing, he's just an all around, impact player in a linebacking corps
being similar to bobby carpenter, IMO, is the best comparaison of him anyone could make, but i think cushing > carpenter barring injuries...
