MIAMI DOLPHINS: BRIAN CUSHING, OLB, USC

Scouting Report

No matter where he goes Bill Parcells wins and the way he has turned this Dolphins franchise around so quickly might be one of his crowning achievements. There is still work to be done though and Miami has plenty of needs they could address with this pick. When doing mock drafts it’s important to look at history and trends and Parcells has used first round picks on impact linebackers everywhere he has been. Whether it was Carl Banks with the Giants, Willie McGinest in New England, James Farrior with the Jets or DeMarcus Ware with the Cowboys. That is what we call a tendency. Brian Cushing has battled the injury bug for most of his career but when he is healthy the results have been impressive. A bit of a linebacker / defensive end hybrid, Cushing would be a perfect fit in the Dolphins 3-4 defensive scheme and he could play outside or inside for them. In fact, in many ways he is similar to Bobby Carpenter, who Parcells liked enough to use a mid-first round pick on during his time with Dallas. The Dolphins could also use a top cornerback and outside of Ted Ginn they really don’t have anything to get excited about at wide receiver either. Keep a close eye on B.J. Raji too because he would be an ideal fit as their long-term successor to the aging and undersized Jason Ferguson at nose tackle.

i've felt that way about the cushing pick ... he's not excelling at one precise thing, he's just an all around, impact player in a linebacking corps

being similar to bobby carpenter, IMO, is the best comparaison of him anyone could make, but i think cushing > carpenter barring injuries...

I agree that Cushing is better than Carpenter but I think Brian's injury history might shy The Trifeca away from him in the first round. If by some chance Cushing falls to our first pick in the 2nd round, I think Parcells might pull the trigger on him then as he would bring a better value.

he won't make it to the second round... i'm just looking quickly at the teams before us in the 2nd round:

26. Baltimore (11-5)
27. Indianapolis (12-4)
28. Philadelphia (from Carolina) (12-4)
29. New York Giants (12-4)
30. Tennessee (13-3)
31. Arizona or Philadelphia (9-7/9-6-1)
32. Pittsburgh (12-4)

The eagles, giants, cardinals could use a guy like him

2nd round
1.Detroit (0-16)
2. St. Louis (2-14)
3. Kansas City (2-14)
4. Seattle (4-12)
5. Cleveland (4-12)
6. Cincinnati (4-11-1)
7. Oakland (5-11)
8. Jacksonville (5-11)
9. Green Bay (6-10)
10. San Francisco (7-9)
11. Buffalo (7-9)
12. Denver (8-8)

buffalo, denver, san fran, jacksonville, cleveland, could all draft him...

of course, his combine and senior bowl (if he opts to play) will determine his draft status but i'd say he's a low first rounder and i think by draft day his status will remain the same...

Cushing could be good as an ILB for us but you'd probably want to pair him with a good thumper like Jasper Brinkley.

I'd probably rather have Clint Sintim, if both were available. Cushing just has struggled so much with injuries..

injured a lot and is compared to bobby "ride the pine" carpenter.

not exactly glowing.

and some want this guy as a 1st round choice?

howz about someone who can put points on the board?

ask the cardinals if they would change any one of their wr's
for ANY lb right now!!!

POINTS win games!!!! POINTS win superbowls!!

he with the most POINTS at the end of the game WINS!!

Here is what I don't understand about Scott Wright. He has Cushing rated as a second to third rounder. He then predicts that we will pick him in the first round, ahead of Clint Sintim, who he has pegged as a first rounder.

I think alot of poeple will end up hating our pick cus it wont be sexy...

Alex Mack C California 6-4 315 lbs solves alot of issues on the Oline in one move.

I think that he has him rated as that but he is trying to guess where teams will pick him. He says that he is an overrated prospect and because of that some team will pick him higher than he should go.

So he is basically saying he can scout players better than Ireland and Parcells, and that they will reach a round or two early for players?

That is a whole lot better.:rolleyes2:

That's what people were saying last year for their reasons that he wouldn't draft J.Long.

Seeing that Carpenter can't even see the field much maybe BP learnt that was a mistake he won't make again.

I have no idea who he's gonna draft but I see Sintim, Raji, Moore, Mack more likely to be picked then Cushing. But really who knows we'll find out come draft day I guess.

Now that Parcells has signed Cameron Wake, look for our draft board to look more like: Moore, Mack, or Lauranitis at pick #25. I also see Pat White in the 3rd round which is our first pick in the second day of the draft.

The Pat White stuff is just a smoke screen. It's a weapon of mass distraction. If the Dolphins are going to go after anyone that gives them some Wildcat possibilities, it would probably be someone like Rodney Landers out of JMU, and it would be either in the 7th round, or undrafted.

And keep in mind Cameron Wake only got $1 million of signing bonus. This is a CFL player who failed to make it with the Giants. The Dolphins gave more money to Charlie Anderson, and that's probably who Wake will compete against. And he may lose. Meanwhile we could easily draft someone that steals Quentin Moses' spot on the roster.

I think that's exactly what he is trying to say. Some of these guys are definitely on high horses like that. I do like Scott Wright the most out of these guys but It seems that he is definitely trying to imply that. Just the fact that Cushing went to USC is enough to overrate him. Look at Mark "instant top ten pick" Sanchez as a great example.

i agree with you on the pat white stuff... they won't draft according to the wildcat, if they do they'll pick up an option quarterback from a small school who's got good size and speed... i know nothing about Rodney Landers though ...

i think you underestimate cam wake though... i don't think he'll be a starter on day one, but he'll see the field often enough next year, i can guarantee you that.

Remember one thing when it comes to cameron wake: he came in the cfl and adjusted to the one yard rule, which stipulates that the defensive front must line up before the play one yard back from the nose of the football... i've made this transition since in high school we have NFL rules, but CFL rules apply once you go in college (well, in quebec that is) ... believe me, it's a huge deal, and for cameron to be this productive with the yard is amazing. He'll face better players in the nfl of course, but if he could put up 23 sacks, i'm thinking at least 5 of them in a limited role... in the end of 2009 or in 2010 he should have the starting gig, that's my "bold" prediction
