Let me preface this by saying that I have not been this excited to be a Fins fan in a long, long time... but people, can someone explain to me why we cannot run a properly executed screen pass... ever?!

This could really help our offense tremendously, and help get Tannehill going a bit, with linebackers stacking the line waiting for an Ajayi run, the screen pass, along with play action should be used way more.

We are setting it up for December.

We can't play all our cards now or else teams will have tape on everything....but oh..wait until December when they unleash the screen.

That play allow will get us in to the playoffs.

Screen to Grant, or Drake??

Bills, Jets and Pats don't stand a chance.

Love the sound of this!!

I want to believe you!

We got very very lucky yesterday that the 4th qtr screen pass on 2&6 to Grant that he dropped was even with the LOS. Otherwise the Jet's recovery holds and it's maybe a whole different ball game than what we're celebrating today.

Couple of reasons that I can see on tape:

-Defenders not respecting the deep pass (and only one person on our WR squad to worry about in Stills), so there are a LOT of defenders around the LOS.

-WR blocking has been abysmal this season.

-Gase preaches short passes that chip away to prevent 3rd and long, as opposed to describing them as home run plays, so it's a bit of a mindset thing.

-Screen passes work well with players that can either 1) Make defenders miss or 2) break tackles. With Gase refusing to dial up many of these plays for Grant or Drake, the only player that fits that bill is Jarvis Landry (whose defender is always defending the quick slant).

How would I fix it if I had one play? Spread out the offense so WRs were on both sides of the ball, design a play for Grant, put Stills on the other side to occupy safety help, find your BEST blocking WR (at this point this may be Carroo) and put him on the same side as Grant, throw to Grant and hope he can get past the one free corner.

Edit: I should also add the Dolphins intentionally were doing all quick 1st option throws to keep Tannehill alive with that terrifying D-Line yesterday. Our entire offense was Gase attempting to outsmart the Jets in order to work in a 20 yard window

Execution. That is the answer to the OP's question. The almost pick 6 was on a really poor initial chip by James. I agree with other within the thread that WR blocking is not sufficient.

I dont consider this a screen pass. While technically it may be one, it is more of a pass in the flat.

For a screen to be effective, you need to draw the Dline in, with the intended receiver beyond the Dline, or alternatively, have a line of blockers in front of him. This pass was thrown immediately to the flat and never had a chance.

Looked like a bad formation for that play. The LBer was all over Grant from the jump. He should have lined up in the right side of the backfield and then run to the left to give him some separation from the LB's. Get him in space.

Fist of all, I think screens are overrated, second, this one is not well designed.... There is absolutely no deception involved, It can only be a screen as soon as the ball is snapped, NFL defenses will eat that **** all day long. If you're going to make it that obvious, because you think Grant will make the free man miss our flat out out run him, you need to throw it further out so he can utilize his speed edge.... But here's the problem, the longer you wait to throw it out so he can out run his free LB, the longer his blockers have to wait before they engage... If Gase is competent, you will not see that screen again this season...

Well, it's a textbook Bubble Screen. You're only looking to draw in the D-line on RB or middle screens to the TE.

My guess here, and it'll be easier to determine once the All22 is released, is that Gase saw something coverage-wise in the previous drive where we had taken two deep shots and was looking to take advantage of a situation. It was man coverage here which is ideal for screen plays.

Wow...no wonder Grant dropped that. There were at least 4 defenders drawing straws to decapitate Grant on that play.

I see the play was designed for Grant to curl to towards the sidelines after the catch to follow his blocks, but the Jets sniffed that out SO WELL it looks like Gase may want to think twice about calling that play without some sort of misdirection. No way that would have gone anywhere even if executed better.

I suspect every D Miami will play will be anticipating a screen to Grant, particularly with him getting very few snaps. Get the D to respect him as a deep threat, THEN bubble.
