http://www.realfootball365.com/nfl/articles/2007/05/dolphins-defensivebacks-aconcern160507.html For years, the Miami Dolphins have failed to truly turn over their stagnant offensive attack. Now, with head coach Cam Cameron at the helm, it is fairly clear that the franchise is set to undergo a metamorphosis in virtually ever facet of its offense. However, it's a specific aspect of Miami's defense -- the secondary -- that has to be a concern for the team's fans.

The Dolphins fielded one of the most inept defensive backfields in the NFL last year. How bad? Here's a hint: Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas had a combined three interceptions in '06. That's just two fewer than the entire secondary. Miami's secondary was also notorious for giving up touchdowns last season, ranking near the bottom of the league with 22 scores allowed. Some of those TDs can be attributed to linebackers in coverage, but the vast majority were the fault of the secondary

The cornerbacks were fine. I know a few of those touchdowns can directly be attributed to Travares Tillman. You already mentioned the linebackers in coverage.

What you failed to mention is how opposing QBs completed just 55.82% of their passes and averaged just 6.58 yards per attempt (9th best in the NFL).

With Bell now starting and the improved depth at CB (Daniels healthy, Shirdonya Mitchell ready to make his mark and Jason Allen moved back to his natural position), I'm not worried about our defense or our secondary in general. I am worried about our OL and our QB situation.

With Capers simplifying the calls, I expect this number to go down significantly this year.

Upon further research of this, I found out that the secondary did give up one or fewer touchdowns in 8 games last season, playing its best during the middle of the year once Bell got settled in at safety. Unfortunately, the last month of the season when they should have been playing their best they regressed.

With another year together and Jason Allen moving back to his preferred position, hopefully they will be on par with the rest of the defense.

22 total touchdowns
8 red zone touchdowns

I trust in our secondary and our OLine. They will both improve, as that is all they can do. Up they go!
The Dolphins decided to keep intact their group of defensive backs, though Jason Allen moved from safety to cornerback. ''We think it's a group that can play winning football,'' GM Randy Mueller said. (FYI: There's concern about Goodman's recent shoulder injury, with an update expected by Friday, his agent said.)
The Dolphins finished fifth in pass defense in 2006, but the defensive backs had just five interceptions. Hill said the defensive backs don't want to merely knock down passes and are ''jumping down'' each other's ''throats'' if they squander a chance for a turnover in practice.

Every single effin article this complete idiot writes is total BS. He has absolutely no clues to what is going on at all and no Dolphin fan should pay any attention whatsoever to what he writes.

I am not joking; In the last year I have continued to read his articles because they are listed on another website's news listings, and every time I read this guys article I come away feeling like just went through a Dakota snirt storm.

This guy has the intellect of Bills Buffalo and is constantly writing derogatory stories about the Dolphins that aren't true. This guy should be blacklisted, and noone should by any means reprint or link to his absurd website.

the truth at the end of the day is that this is our biggest problem on deffense, n with the passing offense that the pats have now we r in a even bigger problem.
I really dont think that there's much we can do at this point other then blitz every down

This team had so many holes. You can only fix so much in a year. At best we're serviceable at worst we're simply bad. When we flip flopped with the Giants last year: Will Allen for Sam Madison, we knew what we were losing and what we were getting (Madison good coverage skills, no run support, Allen good run support, fair coverage skills and hands of stone) Travis Daniels was arguably our best cover guy 2 years ago and was hurt all last year and now he's apparently healthy. Yeremiah Bell started off strong than faded at the end and I couldn't tell you who played the other safety position. Reinaldo Hill , Tillman? I don't remember them making any plays.
The "X" factor is Jason Allen. I've ripped him mercilessly for a bust of a rookie year, but he just can't be that bad... can he? I don't think so. But he's been moved to corner so our safety position looks... and it wasn't addressed in the draft. (We did pick up Cameron Worrell from the Bears) The other "X" factor is : life after that maniac, Saban, left. The secondary guys were drilled by Saban, personally, in every practice. You got to believe that made for some scared cover guys and if you think about it, they played "scared" for the most part last year. Hopefully with the Nicktator gone, the guys will play looser and more confident and Capers is a pretty good defensive coach. We'd agree on that. I'm hopeful these things will add up to a more productive secondary unit this year.

I too am very concerned...why not get a Veteran Saftey if your gonna move Allen to CB?? Mke Doss went for peanuts!!!

Maybe we'll get lucky with the June 1st cuts..

Do we really know?

I have said this before in other threads. I am also very concerned about our DBs. The fact that many people overlook is that the secondary was very average last year, and they were never even tested. Our offense was so bad that our opponents always used very vanilla, conservative game plans. They had no need to be aggressive and throw the ball. They knew that our offense was incapable of scoring many points and therefore they could play conservatively. I am concerned that an improved offense will result in more aggressive game planning from our opponents that may expose a weak secondary. I hope I am wrong, but it definitely concerns me.

I would have to agree that the secondary is a concern. However the adition of Joey Porter indirectly helps the secondary with another dominant pass rusher. J. Allen moving back to corner is a good move for the team in the long run. He has speed good hips and decent ball skills he just needs to fine tune is craft. THe problem he has is no one to learn from. When I was in K.C. during the time of James Hasty, Mighty Mouse, and Dale Carter there was so much information being transferred to us young guys. That allowed a guy like Eric Warfield to learn and become a decent cornor in the league for a while. Me on the other hand I was moved to safety and never could quite grasp the position after playing corner may entire college career. Because of this I understand what J. Allen went through and feel he will perform better this year.

Does anyone know if capers scheme is primarily man or zone?

We were in the top 5 defenses last year with the same DBs. I am not even concerned about our secondary, second year all these guys are together, they're understanding the simplified scheme alot better, J. Allen will get a shot as our nickel(very excited to see him on passing downs). Andre Goodman played really well for us last year, Hopefully travis daniels will bounce back this year after a rash of injuries, you know what to expect from W. Allen. Bell showed alot of promise at safety, and Hill is good enough for me. Although there is not alot of depth after our startes, i am confident they will surprise this year.

i think people tend to forget we also have cameron worrell from the bears who i think is far far better than crummy traveres tillman, i would more see him as our back-up safety rather than tillman. i know he is nothing special but still.

I may be wrong but I think it will be ok. Allen moving to corner should help, Bell starting from day one should help, Travis Daniels being healthy will help. Also all these guys were playing for the first time together in a new system for a new coach. Will Allen and Goodman were free agent pick ups Allen a rookie.

we need a play maker in the secondary we dont have that yet
i think will allen can be that player if the rest of the secondary steps it up

Our defensive backfield does need some tweeking. Brady hates playing against our D and its mainly due to the QB pressure and our D's ability to shut down the run. Capers has been reported to be simplifying the D for our D-backs. That can only make them more comfortable with the system. Brady will be once again getting pressure from our D-Lineman and LB's. This wont change next season.
Its our ability to score against the Patsies where we will win or lose IMO. If we can keep the ball then we can beat them.
