Now I heard this today from another message board and I don't know if it's true, but it's not my idea SO DON'T KILL ME IF YOU DISAGREE!

Anyway, apparently Hank Goldberg said today on WQAM that Huizenga was close to offering the Marlins a sweetheart deal that would give the Fish all luxury box sales, concessions, all the stuff that he rips them off for right now; in essence, the Marlins would be their own tenants during the baseball season. In return, the Fish would pay for a retractable roof and any general improvements. Being a Marlins fan first, this makes me very happy, but I don't see why Wayne-O would go this easy on them after all the crap he's put that team through.

Can anyone corroborate this? Any gently expressed opinions are welcome.

Wayne needs the revenue especially with his lofty plans for a year-round entertainment destination tied into the stadium. Plus, the Marlins haven't been able to get over the $30 million financing gap with Miami Dade County and the City of Miami.

Personally, I think it's ridiculous that the state won't pony up $30 million bucks like they did for Huizenga a decade ago and like they have for NASCAR, spring training stadiums, and various other sporting houses over the last 10-15 years. People say that the money is better spent on education and such, but the fact of the matter is that this money is earmarked for entertainment. It really comes down to the fact that the North Florida legislatures who are completely out of touch with South Floridian views are completely ignorant. The state Senate president, who hails from unimportant Brandon, FL, had the gall to call the Marlins "terrorists" in their negotiations. These are the schmucks we're dealing with.

the north and central legislators dont give a crap about south florida. they only care about guns, god, and nascar.

I herd bits and pieces of it, and supposedly Joe Rose broke the news this morning. I never herd them say the Dade County might be involved too.

I know one thing, the Marlins need their own stadium to ever think of competing with salaries, and paying rent aint gonna cut it, box seats or not.

Las Vegas Marlins, get used to hearing it....

No thank you. I dodge baseball info all season very adeptly, but if a team is smack in this desert backyard of mine there's no way I can do it.

Ha. I can just picture a game outdoors in August, 115 charming degrees and counting. Dry heat my flat ***. It's like sticking your head in a furnace. That's why I retreat to Saratoga and elsewhere every summer.

Our celebrity mayor Oscar Goodman is pushing for a pro franchise but we don't have an adequate facility other than the Thomas and Mack and no league is gutsy enough to venture here due to the gambling aspect. A decade away, at least.

Cant be much worse than a Rangers game in Texas in August. Some players wont sign there because the heat is so bad. I think Vegas is really close to getting a team, even NFL teams have threatened to move there. It doesnt take very long to make a stadium, Florida can committ to go there play a lameduck year in Florida then go. Not a good thing to do to the fans of a team that has had a great run for a former expansion team, two titles, but lets face it baseball doesnt give a crap about its image or its fans. I see either Florida or Tampa moving and Vegas is as likely as anywhere.
The gambling thing isnt a big deal anymore now that a ton of states have casinos, online gambling is rampid also. Gambling just isnt looked at in the same light nowadays. They would probaly have to make a deal to not allow gambling on the Vegas team or MLB games but that isnt a huge deal.

Plenty of fans and civic leaders here agree with you. I'm just not one of them. There would have to be a longterm commitment before a stadium was built. Many of these huge structures are failing, like the new Aladdin, so you're not going to automatically have someone blindly build an edifice costing hundreds of millions with no guaranteed return. The Las Vegas 51s minor league team plays outdoors but I doubt a major league team would settle for anything other than a dome or retractable facility. It's not even a given the city would support a pro team, despite the population boom. Obviously there are tons of competing entertainment options, plus the city hasn't demonstrated it will support anything other than a huge winner. The Rebel football and basketball teams don't draw well other than the Tark Runnin' Rebel heyday and a CFL team flopped here. An indoor football team draws moderately. I realize those aren't ideal reference points.

I think the gambling aspect is a larger hurdle than you estimate. If talks became serious about relocation, there would be a backlash and fear would take over. Right now the Palms Casino doesn't allow NBA wagering because the brothers who own the Sacramento Kings own the Palms. That leads in to the argument that if you're banning wagering then wagering must be a negative, otherwise why are you banning it?

Given the fiasco that was Pete Rose's gambling, I don't think MLB is in a hurry to put a team in Vegas. Now that they've finally got a Washington team, which they've wanted for 30 years, they're not really looking to see anyone move.

*IF* the Marlins moved, I think Portland, OR and Charlotte, NC are more likely destinations.

And by the way, here in the Empire State, Mayor Bloomberg and Gov. Pataki are trying to ramrod through a $2 BILLION sports and entertainment complex where the Jets will play and (they hope) the 2010 Super Bowl and 2012 Summer Olympics will be held, which is obscene on a dozen different levels. So, I sympathize with taxpayers who don't want to foot the bill for the Marlins, even if it's a far smaller bill.

Hmm well your decade prediction might be pretty accurate. Vegas will eventually get a major sports franchise if the city antes up so to speak but it might take awhile. I think the reason why its never been taken seriously as a candidate for professional teams has more to do with population and viability than gambling. Theres always been an extreme hypocricy in major sports with gambling. They know millions of people watch the games specifically to gamble on them but they act like they dont like it. BS complete BS. They know they made millions upon millions from gamblers on their sport. I really do think the public is a lot more open to gambling than it was even 5 years ago or so. Like I said before MLB would have some sort of stipulations put on a franchise as far as gambling goes but I dont think that would stop it.

Wayne is a genius. He wasn't given that award for nothing. Here's whats happening in my opinion:

The marlins contract is running out. They go to the senate and a bunch of crap follows. As it looks like they are going to get a deal wayne pops in and says he may be willing to re-negotiate with them. That coupled with a few other things throws all of this back in to a turmoil of issues. The session ends no agreement was made. The marlins keep getting closer and wayne suddenly pops up with this stuff. My guess is that he has alterior motives with this whole thing. I don't think he's making any money of of them moving so he's stalling them or putting himself in a postion to capatilize off of the move/stadium.
