Dolphins coach Joe Philbin doesn’t want to say much about whether the Dolphins will be “rebuilding” in 2012.“It’s way too early to predict where we’re going to be in the win-loss column,” Philbin said two weeks ago at the NFL owners meetings. “And I think it’d be a disservice to the players to say we’re in rebuilding mode.”Philbin may not have to say anything, though. The Dolphins’ decision with Ryan Tannehill and eighth pick in the NFL Draft might say everything we need to know about the Dolphins’ intentions in 2012. http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/thed...will-determine-if-team-is-rebuilding-in-2012/

I don't think you really rebuild in the NFL. With 53 man rosters it is not really possible to rebuild like say in the NBA where you can change your roster dramatically in one year. Selecting a QB when you don't have a franchise signal caller shows intelligence. Now if the Dolphins start cutting or trading all our best players with large contracts like Dansby, Wake, and Long......then maybe we are giving up on the next season.

Ireland thinks he has built a quality roster except for the QB position. He also has Ross convinced of this. The standard is build through the draft year after year, fill-in-holes through free agency and try to keep your best players at reasonable contracts. Nearly every team does this year in and year out. The Dolphin starters next year will be pretty close to the same as last year regardless of whether Tannehill is drafted.

What's this crap about rebuilding that I've seen this offseason? We're still building. Drafting Tannehill doesn't say anything other than that we're trying to address our need to find a franchise QB.

agree with the 2 guys above me. and if we do draft tanny i dont see him starting this year. so its a good investment not a signal of a rebuild. if come draft day, we trade all our big players or even some, then i say we are rebuilding.

So drafting a future franchise QB is rebuilding?...Moore will still start all of next year regardless

I don't need to see us draft Tanny to know we are rebuilding. Our non movement in FA and creation of holes rather than filling have made that abundantly clear already. Don't see how anyone without aqua colored glasses can say otherwise.

"...Former Colts president Bill Polian, who was preparing for the 2012 draft before the Colts fired him in January, said he had Tannehill rated in the 20s on his draft board and called him a “developmental guy..."

Hmmm... Mid 20s, developmental guy... sounds like a certain Green Bay draft pick in 2005. We may not have Favre in place but you don't want to miss out on a QB that will be good in the future just because he isn't ready today. The question is how patient can you be without a top level starter?

There isn't any difference between rebuilding and the past 10 years. It is just a nice way to say "losing" and make everybody feel good about it.

To me, rebuilding means stripping off a lot of dead weight practically down to the core. Getting rid of Marshall, who apparently didn't fit Philbin's concept for the offense, doesn't qualify as rebuilding. If anything, what this team appears to be undergoing is a modification. It's probably a step back to go two steps forward, but it isn't rebuilding.

I guess a #1 WR is dead weight now? LOL

While I get your point, Aaron Rodgers wasn't supposed to go in the 20s and wasn't considered a developmental guy. I believe he was a consensus top 5 pick and viewed as the most complete quarterback in the draft but there were worries of him being too mechanical and a system QB. He was considered smallish tho but in addition to that, I'm not sure why he slid. But he def wasn't considered a developmental guy. I think Alex Smith was even considered as more of a project than Rodgers was.

I think some teams did view Rodgers as a developmental guy. IMO, anytime you have to change a QB mechanics, he is a developmental guy. Green Bay worked on Rodgers mechanics for a couple of years before he was ready.

So the Jets were rebuilding when they selected Sanchez? And the Ravens with Flacco? And every other god damn team who is concerned with securing their future by selecting a young QB?
