I'm sure there's not a coach in the league that wouldn't love to be able to use all 53 since they're all allowed to keep that many on their rosters. So what is the deal with having to have eight inactive players? Why not just tell teams that you can only have 45 on your roster to begin with?

You just know that each week teams go out and inevitably they end up losing guys at the positions that they sit guys down and then they end up really thin at those spots. I've just never really understood it and I've never heard a coach be able to explain it either.

The rule allowing inactives was put in so that each team would be allow to dress the same number of players. It was put in primarily to account for injuries that may keep some players out for a few games but not for the season.

If the inactive rule wasn't in place, then injured players would count towards your active roster, leaving healthy players who could at least suit up off the field.

It sucks that that means certain healthy players are left off the field come game day, but usually there a lot of injuries on a football team, so thats rare.
