In two off seasons and one season Nick Saban has reworked the defense so that if the games were to start today seventeen of the twenty-five "most likely to make the roster players" are new with the Saban regime.

At DT Traylor, Holliday, Wright, and Vickerson are new while only Zgonina is a holdover.

At DE Carter and Roth are new while Taylor and Bowens remain.

At OLB only Moore remains from the pre-Saban era with Crowder, Spragen and now Hodge added.

ILB is the only spot where the prior regimes players dominate. Thomas and Pape both are veterans of multiple years with the team.

It is in the defensive backfield where the change is the most dramatic. Of the ten likeliest to make the roster, Allen, Daniels, Goodman, Mitchell, Jackson, Cooper, Tillman, and Hall are all new. Only Poole and Bell played for the Phins before Saban.

Sixty-eight percent of the likeliest defensive players have been changed in the shortest of times. Amazingly for the rapid turnover, the quality has risen dramatically and more importantly the results have better than doubled.

Remarkable isn't it???!!!!

I saw that Matt Turk signed with someone today...I'm glad he's gone.

EDIT: that someone was the Rams.

Good post, didn't even realize how different we look from years past til just now.

great info...it is shocking..and I don't think we are done just yet. He has kept the bulk of the stars and has build around them...excellent!!

The turnover has been mindboggling. The Veterans who are still here are from the JJ days.

There is only four or five of the Wanny players left.

didnt realize it was to that extent. younger and faster no doubt. next year probably major defense line work.
thanks for the info:dolphins:

It could be even more dramatic once the season starts. I would think Moore, Zgonina, and Pope may be longshots depending on who is drafted at what position. It could be as few as four of twenty-five or so and only Thomas and Taylor are virtual locks as starters though Poole and Bell certainly have a chance to start as well.

Damn, it's shocking that Moore is still a Dolphin. I thought he'd be gone by now...

I guess he plays special teams??

I thought he'd be gone the last couple years, so I wouldn't be surprised if Zgonina makes the team again. Depends on Vickerson/draft choice staying healthy, although can never discount Saban's college guys Green (LSU) and Shaw (Michigan St, Saban recruit?).

Agree the LB core could see even more changes at the backup spots with so many good ones availabe in the draft. Hodge/Spragan, Thomas, Crowder is a good starting unit. But holdover backups Pope (I like, but small) & Moore (Mr. IR) are bubble guys in the mix with Saban's signings Laginjo (another Mich St Saban recruit?) & Sinclair plus any draft picks for 3-4 roster spots.

" Make Haste Slowly " or....not so slowly....

Some of the moves were really obvious. Tim Bowens and Larry Chester were both injured, so replacing them wasn't an issue. We didn't really have any running backs besides Ricky Williams, so that's fine.

We're on our third or fourth fullback since Konrad , so whatever moves were made there weren't of any real consequence. Quarterback was going to be addressed sooner or later. Fiedler, as "Wannstedt's guy," was more successful than Frerotte as "Saban's guy." Hopefully, this doesn't matter anymore, since we should have a real quarterback.

Morlon Greenwood, Patrick Surtain, Sammy Knight, and Sam Madison were deemed too expensive to keep. The defense felt the effects of all of their departures; we don't yet know about Madison.

There is a rationale to all of these moves, whether you agree with them or not. I wouldn't put too much stock in the fact that a lot of the players have changed.
