What do you guys think of trying to pick up Shaun Phillips from the chargers. He is 25 and coming off quite a good season as his first starting in place of Foley.

Tackles-65, Stuffs 4, Sacks 11.5, FF-4, PD-8

He whould fit in perfectly in our system. Cam knows him, comes from a 3-4 team, and would go from playing opposite Merriman to Taylor.

Now the bad part he is a RFA meaning we must give up a pick. Now I'm not saying we get him if it costs a first, but wait see what the chargers tender him at and look into it. First or second I say no, third on I say do it. Would be cheaper then Thomas, young guy to build around, ready to come in and play, and plays a position of weakness. Some wont like giving up any pick but I feel it is safer to get a guy that allready made the transition to 3-4 OLB then a 3rd round rookie who looks like he might be able to.

How exactly does the tender work. He was a 4th round pick and for some reason thought round picked had an impact on compensation. Does it go-
Highest tender 1st & 3rd, Then 1st then round picked or what?

The round they were drafted in only counts in compensatory picks, not in RFA tenders. If they tender him with a first and third, then that's what they get if he signs with another team (from the team who signed him). If he was a UFA and signed with another team, his original team would get a pick dependent on the round that the player was drafted in. I think I have it all correct.

Anyways, onto Phillips...

Philips has good size, good speed, and definitely can play in a system. I think the cost will be too much (if the Chargers let him and Dielman go, then FFIC is certainly gonna owe 10k Phindollas) for us to look at him after tender is given. I can't imagine anyone would have any objections given his abilities, however.

The guy looked like a pro bowler this year playing opposite Merriman, but IMO no way does San Diego let him go. If there is a way we could get him however I definitely would.

Hell, it looks like Foley will be released, I wouldn't mind picking him up for cheap, he's a very good linebacker.

Say no to giving up draft picks.

A first round would be too much, but I'm not so sure a second wouldn't be worth a look (a third is not only insulting to Phillips, but a lock for anyone interested). I'd have to have someone more intimiate with the Chargers to say how much production is owed to Merriman, but from what little I saw of Phillips it looked like he was getting it done.

Well said. I would love to see a guy like Phillips in Miami, but there is no need to even wish for him. The Chargers have lost so many coaches, and might let some of their UFA go, they are not letting Shaun go.

If we could realistically get him for a 2nd or lower, I'd be all over it. He's a really talented young LB with experience in the 3-4, and we have a need for a playmaking OLB. A 1st is asking too much, given how high our pick is, but if we can steal him away for at most a 2nd, I say do it!

Shaun is a RFA and will be resigned as foley probably wont be playing football ever again.

I dont know that Phillips would be the answer, really. Phillips is playing a purer pass rushing role and Merriman plays a more coverage intensive role despite being the better pass rusher as well.

I think for Miami's situation it would be in our best interest to try to find someone who could play the coverage oriented role and let Jason Taylor stick to the more pass rushing role.

Just because Wannspiel did a bad job of it doesnt mean it's the wrong thing to do. I dont think it's reasonable to let the ghosts of the past turn you off of trading draft picks for players.

At the end of the day, you are still getting players for draft picks. The difference is with trades you are generally getting an older but more proven commodity. If you do it well, it's helpful in ways the draft cannot be.

Don't forget, Philips had 8 passes defensed last year as well as his 11 sacks.

Charger's aren't stupid enough not to tender him first round money.

You're close. If a team puts the highest tender on a player they would receive a first and third. If the put the second highest tender they would receive a first. The lowest tender would be for which round they were drafted in.

Got it. Damn rules get confusing after a while.

He's going to be a beast, but I think SD will match any reasonable offer on him. Though that could change if Norv switches their defensive scheme.
Either way, I'd say he's worth our third round pick, so long as we didn't have to break the bank to get him.
