Should Mike Have Kicked It?

Go for the record?

I am totally on McD's side on this one.

It costs nothing to show some class.
Right, but why is this classy, but having White throw a bomb to Chosen is also classy? In the normal course of football events, you kick a field goal at the 30ish yard line on 4th down. I think he just didn't want to hurt the Broncos because he was their ball boy. I bet he would have done to Buffalo.

I know the board will probably tell me I'm an idiot or whatever, but I don't care. It's been 24 hours, and I'm still reeling from McDaniel's decision here. I've never been so angry after a win in my 30+ years of fandom. I honestly don't know that I'll ever forgive him for this decision.

When a new fan starts watching football, what do you think is one of the most general questions that might cross their mind? How about "what is the most points ever scored in a game?" Well the answer to that question has been the same since 1966, since this team has existed, and we had the power to change that answer, and didn't. That opportunity will very likely never come around again in my lifetime.

More than that, we were just a few yards shy of the most yards on offense in NFL history, again...why not try for those yards?

I don't want to hear about how this was some classy decision, this game was already definitely won by the third quarter. We could've put in the second team then, but we didn't? How/why was it classy to run the score up right until we were on the verge of setting the ALL TIME highest score in NFL history, and then not?

I guarantee if you asked virtually any coach in the same position if they kick that FG for the record the answer is yes. The moral victory is over now, and I hope this decision haunts McDaniel for the rest of his life, that he could've had the distinction of coaching the highest scoring team of all time and didn't because I think it was incredibly stupid and selfish to not give this very special distinction to our long suffering fandom.

Not to mention, 73 is kind of magic number for us.

Obviously, I'm thrilled we're 3-0, glad we're having a great season so far, but the odds of winning a super bowl aren't great, but having this record was. At the end of the day it doesn't matter, but it would've been SOOO cool to have a statue at Hard Rock, or "Highest Score in NFL history" in the Ring of Honor. My head hurts over this one, I'm just gonna have to tell myself Roger Goodell called coach on the sidelines and told him he wasn't allowed to go for it or something, because otherwise there is literally nothing that could ever justify this one for me.

Yes.

Sean Payton would have no hesitation doing that against us.
That’s the point. Payton would have done it because as many have said, he’s a prick. So you want MM to be a prick like Payton? Also, coaches are temporary, the humiliation will last for the players and fans of the Broncos. As a former coach, you don’t humiliate anyone, even pricks, because it affects more than that person. Being classy wasn’t the wrong move and many talking heads acknowledged that the next day.

Does it matter when the record we didn't set was made with a football made of a cow that died two days earlier and was set playing on a dirt field while 5 cent coke was sold?

We have the biggest win in the SuperBowl era and the most yards in a game ever. Works for me. McD didn't kick it. I really don't care either way but as he didn't kick it, it's kinda irrelevant now.

Jesus. We won by freaking 50 and scored 70 points. Yet people STILL have SEVEN paragraphs of **** to bitch about. You people are incapable of joy. Go spend your Sundays doing something else.

Prior to this game; had you been contemplating the highest score in a game a lot?

I for one did not care before and don't care now. I was never bugged that the Reskins scored 72 points It's a vanity metric that means absolutely nothing. What does matter though is that the Dolphins played great on both sides of the ball and we had a great game that will be remembered for a long time.

As far as I can tell the 1966 score of the Redskins was rarely talked about as no one really cared. And still don't.

We were up five scores in the fourth quarter and were still playing starters.

We were up six scores, and were throwing long.

But no, kicking a FG on 4th down with time still on the clock to break the record wouldn't be classy.

They absolutely should have. If the Broncos were hurt in their feefees then they should have stopped something.. at any point during the game.

It's amazing to me how many of you don't understand situational football.

Nobody should have to explain to you the differences, as it ain't that hard to figure out, but here you go anyway.

First, the backups were in. Secondly, there was 9:05 still remaining in the game -- not under a minute, as when McDaniel decided to kneel. Lastly, it was 3rd and 10.

If you can't understand the difference between throwing downfield on 3rd and 10 with over 9 minutes remaining in the game with backups playing versus running up the score with :33 seconds remaining in a game the opponent could no longer possibly stage a comeback -- there's no helping you.

If you watch NBA games, when a team is up double-digits or more with say 30 seconds to go, they dribble the clock out. Even when it results in a shot clock violation/turnover. That is pretty standard. When a player or team jacks up a meaningless 3 while leading by 30 or 40 points, it often results in a confrontation of some sort.

Same logic applies here.

In the normal course of football events, you kick a field goal at the 30ish yard line on 4th down. I think he just didn't want to hurt the Broncos because he was their ball boy. I bet he would have done to Buffalo.

Normal course of events doesn't include leading by 50 with :33 seconds remaining. That's not normal. So your point is completely invalid.

Furthermore, most teams in college and the NFL won't kick a FG with under a minute to go even if their lead is just 20-3. Most teams just go for it in that situation and run the ball.

Yes.

Sean Payton would have no hesitation doing that against us.

Can you cite any examples of Sean Payton kicking a FG with under a minute remaining while leading by, say, 28 points or more? If not, then you're just talking out of your @$$.

If there is an example of the above, were there any extenuating circumstances outside the norm that led to it? Such as the opposing team or head coach being super disrespectful toward Payton, his players or his family? Because that would be the only situation where the practice would be somewhat understandable.

Far too many of you grew up playing Madden video games against a computer opponent and/or online opponents you didn't know and had never met. This is real life with real people. The situations are drastically different.

It's not an easy YES or NO answer. We as fans, and for them as players, coaches, and staff, getting the record would have been amazing, but what Mike McDaniel did was make the classy decision, take the high road, and not run up the score any further.

What he did is fail to immortalize the team with a huge record forever, but brought back class to the Dolphins that the Patriots never had in any of their championship runs, while bringing good Karma to the team.

Karma can be your friend or your enemy, and Karma can be a bitch. The main objective of this season is to get our 1st il_794xN.3958861128_d8q6.jpg of three this year, not to try and get a record.
