Decisions, decisions, decisions. - Brad Barr-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins have an elite player in Cameron Wake, but with the team on the verge of missing the playoffs again and possibly rebuilding, should they try to move their star pass rusher to get some draft picks?

This is a subject many Dolphins fans don't want to think about. Cameron Wake is the Miami Dolphins best player. He's the favorite current player of many fans. His story is a sports movie writer's dream. He played 4-3 outside linebacker at Penn State. He went undrafted in 2005, signed with the New York Giants as a free agent, but couldn't make the team. He went to work in a gym and as a mortgage broker trying to make ends meet while he kept his NFL dream alive. He got a workout for a Canadian football team, but showed up to the wrong place for the workout and nearly missed the opportunity. But he was signed by the BC Lions, where the coach put him at defensive end instead of linebacker. In his first two seasons, he accumulated 39 sacks, earning defensive honors in the CFL. He signed with the Dolphins in 2009 and well, you know the rest.
Cameron Wake is the type of player that offenses have to account for on every play. He has possibly the best first step of any defender in the NFL and can bend with the best of them to get to the quarterback. He's the type of player that most every team wishes they had on their roster. On top of that, Wake has a favorable contract for a player of his caliber. He's a face of the Dolphins franchise. So why would Miami even think about giving a player like that away? There are two reasons why they should think of trading Wake.

AGE
Miami is on the verge of missing the playoffs for a sixth straight season. If they don't, it will be time to rebuild/retool yet again. Unlike previous seasons though, Miami has some young talent to build around: Ryan Tannehill, Lamar Miller, Jarvis Landry, Charles Clay, Ja'Wuan James, Olivier Vernon, Jelani Jenkins, and Reshad Jones are all talented players a new coach could build around. That's a good base to work with. But the other side of retooling is that the Dolphins will need to get rid of parts they can't build around. That means getting rid of aging or declining players.
As good as Wake is, his age will be a factor that does not work in his favor. He will be 33 years old at the beginning of the 2015 season. Wake takes great care of his body and the lack of overall football 'mileage' could keep him fresher than most 33 year old defensive ends. But at some point, his age will catch up to him. Wake excels with athleticism and when that starts declining, will Wake be able to keep up his level of play? There is no doubt that the decline is coming, but when will that happen: the end of his contract in 2017? Next season?

TRADE VALUE
The inevitable decline is coming, but all we know is that it's not here yet. What that means is Wake's trade value is as high now as it's ever going to be. In the past, Miami has held on to a player a season or two too long and gotten nothing for them. If Miami holds on to him for too long and his play drops off, they will have to cut him, netting nothing. Or they can keep him and use him as a pass rushing specialist at a higher price. His contract is great for an elite pass rusher. If he can't remain an elite pass rusher, then Miami will be overpaying him and his trade value will be gone. Trading Wake this offseason means the Dolphins will be able to get the most they can out of the deal.

There is no guarantee that a team will want to trade for Wake, but a query must be made at the very least. There is always a team out there that is close to championship contention that would be willing to yield a draft pick for a player they think can get them over the hump. You can rule out attempting to trade Wake to lottery pick teams. It's a pipe dream to think the Dolphins will trade Wake to the Raiders or Buccaneers for a high draft pick. But teams like Atlanta, Seattle, or Arizona for example may want Wake for a Super Bowl push and would be willing to give up a decent pick to ensure they get there.

CONCLUSION
Wake is a popular player with fans, and most, including myself, would hate to see him go to another team. There are going to be some tough decisions coming up regarding this roster and what to do with Wake is one of them. It's unlikely that Wake will remain a top tier talent when Miami will be in a position to contend and his trade window is closing fast. This offseason will be the best opportunity for Miami to move Wake and get the best value for him, if they choose to move him. There are benefits to both sides of this equation and it will be a critical decision for the person that has to make it.

Thoughts? :ponder:

Some will say that the decline is already in effect. His second half run defense has been horrible this year and he tends to disappear for long stretches in games. While I appreciate his work ethic, pass rush skills, and leadership we need to draft his replacement. And no Dion Jordan is not a viable option as a replacement seeing how he is a LB player the wrong position.

I'm not sure what kind of trade compensation we would expect in return for Wake but a day 3 pick does not equate to what he offers for our team even though it may be in decline.

It would suck to see him go. Definitely a class act that plays with a TON of passion.

Schemes are our problem on D right now, and that falls on the staff. A better DC would make an immediate impact on a sold and talented roster, which we have.

New LB's please!

I'd trade ANYBODY for the right price. Anyone who wouldn't trade a player for the right price is stupid.

"there is no guarantee that a team would want to trade for wake"

 they would love for you to put him on the block

We are deep at his position and i guess it depends on what we could get for him. I know this, Belicheck would definitely trade him and get a 1st round pick for him.

I don't have a problem with it because he is on the decline and we could still score something for him. I say this because we are not killing it anymore rushing our front four, it's takes blitzing for us to get to the QB, so at this point it makes sense

I think his trade value went away after the trade deadline this year.
His contract for the next 2 years is in range with recent pass rushers deals (Ware, Allen)
However they were both gotten without any draft compensation after they were released.

With Wake being our best potential cap savings next year teams will just wait for us to release him for cap savings rather than offering draft compensation.

Whatever decision is to be made, I'm glad it's not mine to be had. I'm not going to separate myself from my fandom here simply for the fact that I don't have to and my psuedo GM opinion on the matter doesn't mean jack ****.

Off the bat, I'd say no. He brings so many valuable traits and veteran experience to be passed along to other teammates. Being a veteran situational defender is not a negative thing to possess on a team especially when that player, such as Wake, brings so many intangibles. I'd love to see Wake continue to play for us and retire as a Fin.

worst case you'd get a 3rd rounder...likely though a contender ponys up a late 2nd to have his services for the next 2 years...i don't know that this upcoming draft is one where it would be worth it to have that extra late 2nd...

but then miami would be putting itself in a doesnt have an alpha pure pass rusher anymore which means even harder to get off the field on defense...and way more "we can't sniff the qb"in our future

You'd get less value back than he has to the team. Houston traded a 7th round pick to get their starting QB. Young high draft picks don't go for more than a 4th. Getting rid of one of our best players for a 5th round pick ain't no solution. It's a stupid pipe dream people keep bringing up. There's no value on the trade market.

I agree with Danny. I think moving wake ( for the right price ) is definitely worth a look. I love Wake... But I'd move anyone for the right price like was just mentioned. Especially when it's a guy his age.

Depends. If we curb kick Philbin and let Hickey pick his own guy. I'd say yea, trade him and Pouncey if we can. It seems like we overrate Pouncey, Wake seems to vanish in big games. See if they could bring us a few extra picks, hopefully with the first 4 rounds. Maybe I'm dreaming. But dang, seems like we are gonna need to restock the D-line, linebacker needs some work, secondary is super shallow. And that's not even counting the problems we have on offense. We need picks. Just my opinion.

I would keep him just for chemistry and being inspirational to other players, let him retire here if he wants to. He may be on the decline, but he's a household Dolphins name for a lot of NFL fans -- not too many of those.

That said, Miami should definitely try and get his replacement going properly. Jordan could have been it, but this coaching staff (and Dion himself) already botched that.

I'm amazed at some of the responses here.....lol.....for the RIGHT price everyone is tradable guys. To say we "want him to retire as a dolphin " is so stupid. You think BB cares about anyone retiring as a patriot? No, he gets the most out of his players and trades them at the RIGHT time for picks and every year NE has a ton of picks. They ones he can't trade he lets go in free agency and gets more picks for that too. BB wins cause he doesn't get attached to players.
