I just read the article about turning Cameron Wake in to a 3-4 LB from a 4-3 DE, and it made think about our defense personal. We do not have a very good ILB more or less 2 good ones. Taylor and Wake are natural DE. I think Starks is best suited playing inside on a 4-3. When Ferguson went down we no longer had a true NT on our roster. It just seems to me we are playing the formation because it is trendy in the NFL right now, and not because our roster dictates that is what we are best suited to play. I would really like to see someone clever come in next year to be a defensive cordinator. Someone like Crennel who get the most out of our roster, and not make everyone learn new positions.

Yes we should play a 3-4. We will get our players in the coming years. Every great defense has to start somewhere. You have to draft for a 3-4, not everybody can play NT or ILB.

3-4 has been my favorite defense for years.

I'm glad we finally switched to it, even though I knew it would mean some of our defensive players would go away.

you and i are trying to get the same thing.wake at de.with the 3-4 they like them bigger than 260.maybe next year he will be at 270.but what i just want to see is wake playing the run.if he holds up there is no reason at all he shoudnt be playing more.at least 75% of the time.when was the last time we saw a sack on 2nd down. giving us down and distance for the defense?he is just giving the tackles all kinds of problems.i have said it before .how is that a bad thing even in the running game?if he can control the tackle the lb's should be able to clean up.i am with alot of the guys here.how do you keep are most explosive player off the field?i dont think wake will ever be able to cover in the open field.wake is strong and very explosive, but his hips dont seem fluid.he would get burnt on down and outs, and stop and go's all day,and forever.please tony do wake and the fans a favor. put wake at de and just him to attack.

I agree that the defensive players we have are def more suited for a 4-3. Wake could be a beast at DE, Starks a beast at DT, JT played DE for what 10 years? Solai can hold the other DT spot. Crowder would probably even be better as he wouldn't have to shed quite so many blocks.

It just seems to me that coaches should put the players in the best situation to be sucsessful, and not make the players change to fit a scheme. The odd thing is coaching staff signed or drafted the majority of these guys, and they seem much better suited to play a 4-3. My big question is why sign guys like Wake and JT and ignore the fact you do not have the MLBs to play your scheme?

Do not get me wrong, as I love this staff, and think this team is overachieving, but I have to also think this defense would not have given up a league high 4th quarter points if their coaches would put them in the positions they are best suited to play.

3-4 works with stud NT and OLB . We got the OLB with Wake and Anderson down the road. NT needs to be a priority in offseason. Everyone who said switch to 4-3 for now with Ferguson out makes good arguments but how hard is it to actually re-work your base defense in mid-season?

i disagree on Starks. he's downright dominant as 3-4 DE. he was never any better than solid at DT in a 4-3. Wake, just like any other DE who has never played stand-up LB, needs time to adjust. once he gets accustomed to playing LB watch out. you generally have a lot more freedom at 3-4 OLB than 4-3 DE. don't get me wrong, i know we have to address certain areas, but we're on our way to being a very good 3-4 defense IMO.

If by on our way you mean only 3-4 players need to be added then I agree.

Wake played LB at Penn State, he switched to DE in the CFL.

As for the OP, we need to stay committed to the 3-4 now. When Randy Starks left Tennessee, Jeff Fisher and Jim Schwartz admitted he was probably better suited as a 3-4 end. Paul Solia is growing into a NT. Our LBs are also better suited for the 3-4. The only player I think could do better in the 4-3 is Merling as a strong side end.

I am sorry but a lot of you are very wrong. We do not have a solid 3-4 linebacker on the team. When running a 3-4 you need 1 OLB who can stop the run, and one MLB who can shead blocks and is powerful against the run. Then you need one OLB who is fast and versatile to rush the QB and cover, and one MLB who is fast and versatile so he can blitz and cover. Mainly because we do not have a MLB who can rush the QB or cover a TE or RB. If we had a MLB that fit a 3-4 Yerimiah Bell might get the recognition he deserves, or he would have half the tackles he has this season.
