I have read a lot of threads and articles about Penny, saying how bad he is and how he can only take the fins so far. Some say he has no arm, some say we went to the wildcat because we have no QB. Others say he makes bad decisions and can’t win a playoff game.
To all this I say it a bunch of BUNK! Here are the reasons:
It’s true that Penny does not have a strong arm and that he can not fling a ball 60-70 yards down the field like a Ryan or Cutler can do. But what he can do is put the ball there accurately. Even the Media deems him as one of the most accurate passers playing today. If he has time he can pick apart any defense. We all saw him do it many times last season. With the receivers he has in camp right now it is tailor made for him, most are slot types that catch passes in the 10-30 yard range. Ginn being the only deep threat at this point. The receiver group plays right into penny’s strengths. So to say he has no arm just does not hold up. The job of the QB is to lead the offense and move them down the field, not to throw 70 yard bombs, if you want that go cheer for Oakland…….
As for the wildcat the coaching staff did not switch to it because they felt they had no QB they switched to it to open up the running game. With the OL they had last year early on they were still meshing into a unit and during that time the running game suffered badly. Penny’s throwing kept the fins in the season opener vs. the Jets. As for the Arizona game it was just one of those games where they got their butts handed to them plain and simple, it was a total team failure, not just Penny’s. After the Wildcat was used in the Pats game, the running game opened up some which helped the passing game as well.
To say that penny chokes in playoff games may not be a fair statement, since he has only played in one for the dolphins so far. I believe I saw a post that showed in his career he had 6 playoff games and that 2 were won with 4 losses. That may be correct I’m not sure I have not researched it to be sure. But the point is don’t judge him on the one playoff loss against the Ravens. If you watched the game you saw that he had no time to throw because the defense was in his face all day. Once the Dolphin fell behind, he threw some passes that he should not have because he was trying to make something happen. Hats off to the Raven defense they played great that day.
It is my hope that he stays healthy this year, to me that is the only real knock I see in him he’s been injury prone his whole career. However if the conditioning program the Dolphins have in place works as well as it did last year I think he has a good chance to make it through the season.
Do I feel that Chad Henne is the future…..? yes but not just yet, as long as penny stays productive and continues to win games and provide the leadership he showed last year, you ride that train as long as possible.
Show the guy a little love people he deserves it.
