Shrine Game: Monday Report

Alright good stuff...

I don't blame you for not wanting to pay attention to any of the runningbacks there....I'm not fond of any of them either...

I was also really curious to see what you had to say after seeing Martin Tevaseu in person....he's obviously more "round" than "big" and seems like he may lack the base from what I gathered in your blog...but he's by most accounts an intelligent, hard working, strong character type of kid who's overcome some adversity to get where he is...

If Kam Chancellor can show the COD skills and range to play safety....that 6-3, 232 pound frame is probably going to get very interesting as the draft approaches....

Jeffrey Fitzgerald is a guy I've also been high on...and one of my personal favorites as a potential 5-technique.....I like Doug Worthington as a 3-4 end prospect as well...

Rahim Alem has never impressed me....when teams ran the ball most effectively on LSU...they ran it right at Alem when they wanted success on the ground...

Verner is also one of my favorite corners in this draft......Barry Church is a guy that I like a lot as a SS prospect too....struggles a bit in man coverage with receivers in drills?

Andrew Quarless is a guy I like that I think still has a substantial amount of untapped potential.....6-5, 248 makes me like him even more...

Blair White is another one of the 8 or so senior WR prospects that selectively impress me......I'd be interested in how Verran Tucker does this week too though....I think he's got a little toughness and gets off the press fairly well on tape...

Ekom Udofia is one of the few guys I like to potentially be an effective nose tackle in the NFL..

I find your observations of O'Brien Schofield interesting....on tape his comfort level in space seems to be adequate in games on a limited basis....but he's obviously more comfortable with his hand on the ground and rushing from different angles..etc.....this is an important week for him IMO if he's wants to be a conversion guy...

fitzgerald got kicked out of uva and he was a player...another solid 3-4 end prospect

I'm happy to hear that Nate Collins and Kam Chancellor did well. I think Chancellor has the range, and closing speed, and ball skils to be a FS. He struggles when he has to play close to the line.
Nate Collins reminds me of those Green Bay DTs; a 6-2 ball of fire. Would love to see him in Phins uniform, regardless of his size.

chancellor is another physical specimen much like mays, but his problems in coverage at the college level scare the hell out of me. both he and mays i see as good SS in the NFL.

this is the first mention i've heard of udofia. ive been high on this kid for a while now. dude is built like a house and immovable on the D line. i think he'd be a great addition for us. i just hope he doesn't rocket up the draft boards like roy miller did last year - that pissed me off.
 
hey ck, you and wes bunting are seeing 2 different things with dexter davis...this is wes' monday post practice report

Arizona State DE Dexter Davis is trying to prove to NFL teams that he can make the transition to OLB if needed, but it wasn’t a productive start for him Monday. Davis isn’t a gifted athlete to begin with, and he really looked stiff when asked to get a bump on tight ends off the line and play in space. He consistently struggled to stay with BYU tight end Dennis Pitta any time the two were matched up, and he didn’t exhibit the type of fluidity needed to make me feel he can play in space as a 3-4 OLB in the NFL

Yeah we've talked about it and I just feel very differently. I think they're holding him up to a high standard when you consider the conversion he's being asked to make. They're talking about him staying up with guys like Dennis Pitta downfield and as a 3-4 OLB he wouldn't be asked to do that. What he brings to the table over some of these other guys is the ability to set the edge and be aggressive and strong.

We just don't see eye to eye on him.

i'm interested in hearing what you think a 3-4 solb's coverage responsibilities in our defensive system would be??? slimm...others???

i would think setting the edge vs the run would be a requirement and paramount and anyone who can't do that or doesn't have the potential to is not a candidate but in coverage what would these guys be asked to do???

i would think a solb for us must be able to jam a te at the los be able to drop into a soft zone in the outer half of the field and cover a man one on one in the flats...anything i'm missing???

i don't see us asking a solb to run vertically down the field with a seam te...although that would be great if a guy could at 265 lbs...lol
 
here's an espn view from mcshay on dexter davis in todays practice...

At 6-2, 245 pounds, Davis is undersized for an end so he'd have to prove he could play in space as a linebacker and that didn't work out very well for him on Wednesday. He just didn't look natural. He was very stiff in space and he struggled with any sudden change of direction. For example, in the first team period, he went to corral North Dakota State RB Patrick Paschall on the outside, but Paschall cut back inside and Davis was unable to recover, lost his balance and nearly fell to the ground. He also struggled in man coverage. His lack of size and his struggles to play in space could send him falling into the later rounds of the draft.
 
McShay was pimping Daryll Clark as the most impressive player in Shrine practices. Nuff said. He's an idiot. And I totally have tons of respect for a ton of draft people (even the ones that it's become popular to criticize like Kiper), and yet I'm totally comfortable saying that about McShay.

If Todd is talking about the play that I think he's talking about, what he doesn't tell you is that Davis destroyed Pitta in order to set the edge on that play, and forced Paschall back to the inside where there should have been more help.

I can deal with criticism of Davis in coverage down the field, it's valid. He wasn't doing well there in his first ever work as a linebacker. But he intrigued me with his ability to set the edge of the defense and get off blocks and make a play on the ball. It's not something you assume a DE can do just because you put him at a LB position.

I've been a big fan of Greg Hardy since you brought him into a heavy light last year. The red flags on the character issues worry me, but the front office also took a shot at Vontae who was said to have character concerns of his own.

If Greg Hardy has his head on straight, I'm more than willing to take a shot on him. That video you put up of him taking on Oklahoma last year was amazing to watch.

I'm not so sure at #12, but if we do decide to trade back a bit (not counting their performances at the combine), I'd hope to walk away with either Weatherspoon or Hardy. Their talent level is probably top 15 as well.
