Shula and Jake Scott Hug and Bring the Wall Down

Jake Scott MVP of the Undefeated Season Superbowl. For those of you never saw him play... he was fast, strong and he hit like a freight train. They should retire 13 twice!!!!!! If he hadn't had the fight with Shula his number would have been retired and Marino would NEVER have worn it.

easy now . jake was awesome but not worthy of retiring his number. there were many who played great those years but dont have their numbers retired.

I was at the show. I knew about "the hug" but didn't get to see it. One of the show dealers was telling me about it. He said that when it happened flash bulbs were popping from every direction. I was so thrilled to be there and to hear that they were able to finally bury the hatchet after all these years.

I got to meet both Coach Shula and Jake Scott and each signed my 1972 Dolphins RK Throwback helmet and and also a Perfect Season Tribute lithograph. I also got to meet and get autographs from Mercury Morris, Bob Griese, Dick Anderson, Manny Fernandez, Jim Langer, Larry Little, Earl Morrall and Jim Kiick. Everyone was very nice and respectful and it was an honor to meet all of them.

On a side not, Jim Langer's hands are like a catcher's mitt. When I shook his hand, mine literally disappeared. All I could see was his hand and my forearm. :O)

FYI for anyone that is interested. The same company is having another show July 9 -11 with more 72 Dolphins in attendance. As of today, the list includes Larry Csonka, Nick Buoniconti, Paul Warfield, Garo Yepremian, Marlon Briscoe, Bill Stanfill, Marv Fleming, Larry Seiple, and Bob Keuchenberg. And, Dan Marino is also scheduled to be there too. I will be there again. The website for the show is www.csashows.com

Scott and Anderson were AWESOME as safeties. I remember Anderson's 3 INT game in the playoffs. Such a great team.

What a great collection of great players and coaches.

And so good to see the wall come down. Scott was his own guy, not a jerk, just his own guy. One of these guys that got a life after football (fishing in Hawaii) and is loving it. Glad to see that he and Shu have mended fences.

Now, THIS is news.

So glad to see them on good terms (it appears) again. It might be worth it to go Miami after all...

Great news. Two stubborn guys but it never should have strung along for more than three decades.

I hope someone provides a picture of the hug.

My only beef with Hyde's column is he inaccurately portrayed the Scott trade to the Redskins in 1976. It wasn't for peanuts. George Allen pillaged us, taking advantage of Shula's ire. We GAVE Washington a 4th round pick along with Scott, for a lanky worthless safety named Bryant Salter. Many fans think we received the 4th round pick, which would have been logical, but it went the other way. It's still inconceivable we could agree to that, until you consider it could have been much worse. The terms of the trade would have bumped the draft choice to a #2 if the Dolphins had ever signed Salter to a contract. We did not, after he proved so mediocre in 1976. That was his only season in Miami, in fact he didn't last the full season. We were having a horrible season and he was released late in the year. It was Salter's final season in the NFL.

Gad, I just realized I typed Scott trade. Must be stamped into my brain after all those commercials.

Great News To Hear.....Both Jake Scott & Dick Anderson should be in the Ring of Honor and The Hall of Fame...They were that good...I called Jake in Hawaii a LONG time ago....Got cussed out because of the time change from NJ to Hawaii....But did get my Photo signed.....that I would NOT part with for the world...Have almost the whole 72 Team...even the ones who are passed now.
They will always be my Hero`s.....

And Dick Anderson told me in his Office that a part of the Heart of the Dolphins team was ripped out when Jake Was traded to Redskins for next to nuthin becuse he would not take a shot to play in a Pre-season game....Shula`s ego killed us that day and in the 74 Playoff game when Henry Stuckey played for Lloyd Mumphord and then fell down allowing the Raiders player to get up and run for a TD never touched down.....

If your age is correct you didn't see them play other than in highlights I did. Jake Scott was an amazing talent whose Dolphin legacy was trashed by Shula's ire.

"You have to see Scott, too. He's the most unique of those Dolphins. A person so loyal that, later in life, he would travel halfway around the world to see a college teammate on his deathbed. A player so feared even as a rookie that veterans didn't ask him to sing his college fight song in training camp like the other rookies.

And tough? Forget his Most Valuable Player award of that Perfect Season's Super Bowl. Scott played the first Super Bowl of that era, the loss to Dallas, with two broken wrists. They were put in casts after the game. He joked that when he went to the bathroom, "I find out who my true friends are." "

Great news for the two of them. Loved to watch Jake play but hated how he was traded so quickly, Shula was as stubborn as Jake. They won together in football but lost outside of the game and needed that moment to show that time has healed both of them. Great story.
