Sports Illustrated is having a worst week and has a collaboration of the NFL's worst on various topics. The Dolphins earned a few honors. Have to say the worst gut punch for me was the loss to the Chargers in the '82 playoffs.

Worst draft classes

9. Miami Dolphins, 1984

Notable picks: Jackie Shipp, LB (14); Jay Brophy, LB (53); Bud Brown, DB (305)

In 1980 the Dolphins drafted future Hall of Famer Dwight Stephenson. Their 1982 class was led by WR Mark Duper and '83, of course, brought Dan Marino.

Then there's the 1984 draft.

Shipp, like Brown, stuck around on the roster for a few nondescript seasons. The cost to land Shipp, however, only made his lack of production sting more—Miami dealt away its own first-rounder plus two thirds to move up for the Oklahoma product. Just four of the Dolphins' 12 picks remained with the team into the '84 season, not including fifth-round QB Dean May (one career completion). RB Joe Carter (No. 109) rushed for a grand total of 589 yards as an NFL back.

Biggest gut punch loss

Miami Dolphins: Jan. 15, 2000, AFC divisional round—Jaguars 62, Dolphins 7

When the Dolphins hired Jimmy Johnson to be their head coach in 1996, they hoped the coach could build a team that could win multiple Super Bowls—exactly what he did with the Cowboys. Miami never finished higher than 10–6 in four years under Johnson, winning just two playoff games. And it was this loss to the Jaguars—marking the end of Johnson's tenure and Dan Marino's final game—that was the most agonizing.

Miami was hopeful after beating the Seahawks in the wild-card round, but the Dolphins ran into an unexpected buzzsaw against the Jaguars, who handed them the second-worst postseason loss in NFL history, behind only the 73–0 thrashing the Bears handed to the Redskins in 1940. The Jaguars were up 41–7 at the half, and never hit the brakes. Marino was on the bench early in the third quarter, and the Dolphins amassed just 131 total yards on offense.

One for the Jets

New York Jets: No. 27, 1994, Dan Marino's Fake Spike—Dolphins 28, Jets 24

The Jets were 6–5 to start Pete Carroll's first season as an NFL head coach, but things were about to go downhill very quickly. Carroll's team welcomed the Dolphins to Giants Stadium in Week 13, and got out to a 17–0 lead in the third quarter. But Miami stormed back with Dan Marino's four touchdown passes to Mark Ingram. One of those four was a fake spike that the Jets thought Marino was taking to stop the clock with 22 seconds left. Instead, he threw a game-winning eight-yard touchdown pass to Ingram. It was backup quarterback Bernie Kosar who came up with the idea, and the befuddled Jets never won a game the rest of the season. Carroll was fired at the end of the season, to be replaced by... Rich Kotite. Ouch.

Worst players

JOHN BOSA & ERIC KUMEROW
DEs, Miami Dolphins
Tough to separate this duo because, right in the heart of Dan Marino's legendary career, the Dolphins spent back-to-back first-round picks on Bosa (1987) and Kumerow (1988). The duo combined for just 12 sacks with the Dolphins, each playing all of three seasons before calling it quits. Miami then spent a 1989 Round 1 selection on RB Sammie Smith, who fumbled enough to make it seem like he might be actively sabotaging the Dolphins.

That Jags game was a gut punch, for sure. For some reason the first game that comes to mind as a gut punch was blowing a huge fourth quarter lead to the Jets in Monday Night Football. I stirred awake just in time to see their comeback begin and it cemented my hate for them among all of our rivals.

John Bosa was propped up by steroids. After entering the NFL he had back to back knee injuries. Perhaps Joey will have better luck

Worst Pick in recent times has to be either Ted Ginn Jr or Pat White... both names make me throw up in my mouth a little... (I have had the Dion Jordan pick wiped from my memory to stop me crying and breaking the TV...
)

I disagree with the Jags stomping being the biggest gut punch. I was numb after the 1st quarter.

My biggest gut punch was Pete Stoyanovich shanking against the Chargers to go to the AFC championship.

Absolutely no doubt about it. This game was sickening so many controversial calls means stepping out at the 2 yard line, Parmelee getting a safety when he had the ball oUT of the endzone. San Diego got a bad call before we picked the ball off to. Leading off to Pete missing a fg to seal it, after a ****ty squib by the Chargers. Thanks for reminding me though now the nightmares will start up again.

To be honest, we had a lot of nightmares to forget. I'm kinda feel like I'm watching one with the play calling during the Joe Philbin era.

Was Ireland drafting in 87-89? Think about not landing talent for 3 years . It at least got us Webb the following year. Now that we take a step back, we wonder why Danny never won a Super Bowl, and most say at that time, no run game. But it was clearly a lack of overall talent on the team.

Shula IMO is the best coach in NFL history. His shortcoming was as a GM. His career was long and overlapped into the Era of specialization in terms of player procurement. He began coaching when the HC was essentially a GM.
Because of the complexity of scouting and talent assessment, it became impossible for a busy HC to also be studying rosters of prospective college players on a continual basis. Therefore, there was a need for a full time GM to handle and delegate those responsibilities. To the traditional HCs like Shula, that was considered a loss of control over their teams.
He failed to hit on many of his draft picks in the late 80's, especially on defense and it really held the team back during most of Marino's yrs.

Agreed. The only time I've literally cried over the Dolphins.

Wow I always knew the fake spike hurt but didn't realize it was the beginning of thebend for Carroll. We could've been in a division playing against Carroll AND belichek. Phew!

the irony with Bosa is that I think most of us would kill to draft his son in 2016.

I get the feeling in a few years Dion Jordan will be the worst. But SI said to be the worst you still can't be active in NFL

We also drafted Jason Allen over Santonio Holmes and Chad Greenway. Both of whom I wanted.

honestly back then I wanted Donte Whitner. Then Buffalo reached for him (which is weird to say as he's become a very good safety every where else he's played), after that I wanted Holmes. I also remember a lot of people wanting Manny Lawson or taking a chance on Antonio Cromartie. Basically any other move would have been better than Allen.

JLFIN:
man do I agree with you! But there was so much loyalty to him that anything less would have been a PR nightmare. It pains me to think of this, but Danny and the Phins could have had some rings if there was a better personnel man. With Marino at the helm, GM's would have been breaking down our doors
