Doug Farrar: Miami Dolphins

Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill was sacked 58 times last season, the most in the NFL by 10 over Baltimore's Joe Flacco. That had something to do with the Richie Incognito/Jonathan Martin bullying incidents, but neither Incognito nor Martin were pass-protectors at even a league-average level. Getting Branden Albert to fill Martin's old shoes at left tackle and selecting right tackle Ja’Wuan James in the first round of the 2014 draft should do a lot to keep Tannehill upright. And if Tannehill is given time to make things happen, he'll do it -- though his results will be inconsistent at times.

This preseason, James has given up no sacks or pressures of any kind. That doesn't tell the whole story, but it does indicate that James is a mammoth upgrade over Tyson Clabo, who was a swinging gate at right tackle last season. Head coach Joe Philbin is still evaluating the running back tandem of Knowshon Moreno and Lamar Miller, but the line will help. And maybe with some time in the pocket, Tannehill can get some of those deep balls out to speed receiver Mike Wallace, who caught just six passes in which the ball was thrown over 20 yards on 36 such attempts in 2013.

On defense, the Dolphins have a good front line and pass rush (which could be great if they finally figure out how to use Dion Jordan), a pretty good secondary, and linebackers who need to step up. Also on the list of individuals who need to step up is Philbin, whose demeanor alternated between "fake tough guy" and "totally clueless" when things fell apart for the team last season. I'm not convinced that Philbin is made to be a head coach -- he seems more the assistant type -- but there's a better front office in Miami these days, and the improved talent should be enough to buy the Dolphins a playoff spot in an AFC East that appears to be pretty mediocre outside of the Patriots.

Thee Oline should buy more time , Moreno should start, the team should throw the ball and only run to keep teams honest...

IF Lazor lets Tannehill run at will, by clearing out the WRs we will convert a lot of the third downs we leave on the table

I can see a few scenarios where we make the POs as a WC, I don't see a division title in the makings

I'm not about to heap praise on JuWuan James just yet. He hasn't played a single live game. But, i am pleased that he appears to be rising to the occasion in preseason. If he keeps doing a good job of pass pro, he may be our answer at LT should Albert go down. If he sticks at RT, we will have to work on his run blocking ... but the solid pass pro is the most important thing, so keep it up!

I'd say the rest of the Dolphins assessment is fair and sound.

I have to agree with that assessment in it's entirety. Namely, the part about Philbin. The players don't respect him, or play hard for him. That's why they crashed in Weeks 16 and 17.

I cant agree with you on this point. We lost the last two games because of the woes along the offensive line, not because of a person that does or doesnt motivate players...

Can't say anything is wrong with that. All true, down to the Philbin statement. For me the fact so many people say it makes me a little skeptical myself. I really think that the leadership on the field will be a lot better this year which will help a ton. I also think the additions of Cortland Finnegan and Moreno will add some much needed toughness to each side of the ball. If Moreno runs like he did last game all season long, we are gonna have a pretty awesome offense.

Yes that, and a lack of toughness. We just got beaten up the last two games.

That's not it. Our OL sucked and our OC didn't have anything in the bank left. We went up against stout DL's who applied pressure. We beat the Pats and then got too high. I was up close and personal in Buffalo. RT had no time to crap his pants. Pulled fire alarm at 3am didn't help either.

then jets got the blueprint.

The snippet on Dion Jordan draws me back to what I have been thinking lately....

A lot of us have been asking why is Jordan not playing LB. If you look closer, you will find he is actually dropping back to cover a lot and he does it well. You take their TE out quickly by surprise that is big to me. Especially since he doesn't need to hold cus of his size.

I believe Jordan is just doing what the coaches want him to. Not PED's obviously, but to be a run stopper first, drop back in coverage, and I expect him to be used in the speed package on 3rd down. This is why I think we beat the Packers.

fair article. this team can make the playoffs, but things have to fall in to place. if they can get a little bit of a run game, the offense can be greatly improved. if you take some pressure off that defense, watch out. better than the Pats? I don't know. Brady still looks good, but they might struggle with his receiving targets.

Trying to keep teams honest to the pass with little running is what we did last year and the balance didn't pan out well. Last year the Eagles had 31.2 rushing attempts per game and 31.8 passing attempts. On the contrary we ran significantly less with only 21.8 rushing attempts and 37.1 passing attempts.

I believe what the Eagles did last year is a lot more indicative of how we'll look this year. We'll see a lot more of what we did against the cowboys in terms of running the ball than you or others might think. We ran 35 times and passed 40. Decent balance for today's style of game.

The Dallas defensive line made our O-line look WAY better than it is. I hope people realize that.

Our rushing game plan was still good, though. We have to have our ship tight even if it will be much tough sledding cuz there's always some opportunities. I like that our roster has more options. Better secondary, more versatile D-line, more talent at LB with guys like Tripp & McCain, more good 4th & 5th WR options (Damian Williams is the real deal), more good O-line options and quality depth.
Juwan James looks the part so far and I liked Billy Turner to have NFL talent, as opposed to Dallas Thomas who clearly doesn't.

I wish I had the ability to differentiate between a bad player and an unmotivated player like most on this site. I would guess they would look the exact same to us on a TV screen but everybody else seems to be an expert so it must be just me. I would like to know the experts evaluation on the KC-Colts playoff game though. Both teams were "unmotivated" for a half, so both good coaches? Both bad?

After every single loss invariably somebody would say we lost because the team was flat. Which infers with a better coach we must have been a 16-0 team? I think Jonathan Martin's poor play alone would have precluded a perfect season regardless of how motivated he was, but again, maybe its just me.

If you're a professional football player, and let me reiterate...PROFESSIONAL...you should play hard no matter who is your coach. Just because I don't care for my boss sometimes doesn't mean that I don't bust my ass when I work. That's high school or college logic. If you're not a hard worker and have to be motivated by somebody else to do something, get the **** out and let somebody who is a man take that spot.
