How does someone become a great football player when he does a good job training for a month to improve his 40 time? Its amazing these guys can make millions off half a second.

Vernon Davis - top ten pick just b/c he ran a 4.35? He isnt even a TE....cant wait till they try to play him in the three point stance and he gets knocked on his ***

Jimmy Williams - suddenly lost all his talent when he ran a tenth of a second too slow?

Donte Whitner - couldnt even crack the starting lineup until last year - now he runs fast so hes a mid first round pick...

Jimmy Williams isn't dropping because of a slower than expected forty time, although that is certainly a part of it. Scouts have always had questions about his ability to be a cornerback at the NFL level. Most have projected him as a safety, and that alone can cause a guy like Jimmy Williams to fall in the draft. Safeties just aren't valued high at all. There is some talk that Michael Huff is dropping slightly because some teams see him as a safety.

The biggest issue with Jimmy Williams right now is his character and attitude. He has not come off well at all during interviews, and there are some issues in his past that shed some doubt on his character. When you combine that with the fact that most teams simply don't see him as a cornerback, you have a guy who is going to take a tumble on draft day.

You are so off on the other two that I won't even dignify those comments any further.

IMO the combine and workouts are a little overrated.

I realize you cant possibly watch every player. But you just wonder if these people ever watched any tape other than Vernon's highlight reel. Like mabey the games where he actually played against decent defenses....when they consistantly shut him down? He rarely got past the line of scrimmage against the good defensive teams in the ACC....FSU, Va Tech, BC...hell even Wake Forest beat up on him. The only time he really excelled was as an H-Back or split out as a WR. This is a guy who will be a top 10 pick and have fans expecting him to become the next great TE.

Vernon Davis has the second highest strength index (797) on the Maryland team last year. He holds the schools strenth record for TEs in the bench press (460), the squat (685), and the power clean (355). Combine that strength with a 42" vertical jump and 4.41 speed and you have a potential mismatch that would be greater than Shannon Sharpe had on many LBs. If he gets knocked on his butt it's because of poor technique not because he's not big or strong enough.

The workouts are overrated. It isn't a perfect science and thast why guys like brady fall to the 6th rd.

The combine and/or pro day workouts are only one part of the criteria used in evaluating players. It gives teams a base on evaluating players.

Example.
According to Chad Jackson, the biggest question mark on him prior to the combine was his speed. Well his 4.32 40 dispelled that and now he's considered one of the top two WRs in the draft.

Drafting is not a precise science and there will always be players like Zach Thomas who defy the numbers and excel at the pro level.

Precisely my point. Its almost as bad as the people who say...."hes a 95 on Madden, he must be good." You try to measure how good a football player the man is by how high he can jump and how much he can bench.

Until they come up with a test that measures "HEART"
players like Zach will slip and become hall of fame players.
