Silverphin
Chairman of the 'Owned! Awards' Commitee
Hey guys. It's Silverphin, back with another column.
We are now 0-2. And because I didn't do a column last week, I'll post my opinions this week on both games.
But before I start however, I have some unfortunate news: Our fanbase has lost 20 Million people around the world due to mass suicide. Apparently, they thought there was no more hope in the world, and instead of making love to their wives or husbands, go out for a night out on the town to forget about it, or just getting over it, they decided to take the stupid way out.
Daunte Culpepper
I'm going to semi-blame and semi-defend Culpepper.
I'm not going to act like that Culpepper is not at fault at all. He did make some bad decisions in the game. The pseudo sack was definitely butter fingers on his part. And some of the bad throws really killed us, like that throw straight into the hands of a Bills' linebacker and the interception by Jerry Porter.
However, he did makes some good throws, really hooked up with Chambers (in the second halves of both games), Brown, and Welker to a greater extent and Booker, Barnes, and McMichael to a lesser extent. But for the most part, he played like a player who doesn't have faith in his O-line....
Offensive Line
.....though can you really blame him? I'm surprised Culpepper had time to breathe. While Vernon Carey looked good in both games, except for a couple of sacks allowed and Kendyl Jacox did well last week, the line did a whole lot better against Pittsburgh than they did against Buffalo. Culpepper at least had some time in Pittsburgh. In Buffalo, they were barely able to give three seconds. And when they did, that was a rare occurence in itself.
L.J. Shelton should know better. He faced guys like Rice and Freeney, but yet he gets owned by Ryan Denney. Not to take anything away from Denney, but come on. He's turning into the '06 McDougle.
Offensive play calling
Mike Mularkey. Alumnus of my high school. I have respect for him. But the thing is though, his play calling was explicitly questionable. What do I mean by explicitly questionable? I mean when I was watching the game, at times I was thinking "What the **** were they thinking?" and other questions that include a word that would struck by a ruler in a Catholic school.
Every single time in the second half, the run is practically abandoned despite Brown's sucess in that area. Last week, he only had fifteen touches in the game. If Ricky was still here, this would of been great. But he's the featured, and he average 4.7 yards per carry last Sunday, and while two weeks ago he wasn't to hot in the first half, he stepped it up big time in the second half. Give him more carries.
Secondary
We burned on many plays. But let me defend Will Allen. It wasn't his fault for pass interference. He was just unfortunate to trip. However, due to some blitzes, the corners were without safetly help.
The Bright Spots
Ronnie Brown has been quite a pleasant surprise. He has 100 yards on 3.3 ypc despite limited touches and has nine receptions for 84 yards.
Matt Roth is now showing me a little something-something. He outright destroyed Willis McGahee on one play. He now has three tackles and one tackle for a loss on the year.
Yeremiah Bell has been the only bright spot in the secondary, sacking JP Losman. One can say he was the "Star" player in the secondary.
Say what you want about Wes Welker in the return game, but no one can doubt that he is a number three receiver. Will he every be a number two receiver? Maybe not, seeing as that may be Hagan's role in the future. But right now, he has proven himself legitimate threat on the third spot in the receiving corps.
Kevin Carter was able to make his presence felt and grab a sack. He also should of had a forced fumble. But according to the referees, a quarterback doesn't have to be down on the ground to be sacked.
Final Word
Well, all I have to say is: Buffalo can kiss my
