Our cornerback situation seems that it will solid for many years to come...that being said, at this point in the season, who do you all think is the better of the 2 cornerbacks? I know Vontae seems to make plays more often, but are they not throwing to Smith's side very much?

smith has talent but lacks couarge like fellow teammate ted ginn ! needs to tackle and quit being scared.

Davis rocks it, All i see from Smith is him falling on the ground missing tackles, and the once in a while knock down of the ball

Why do we have to keep comparing the 2 like this. Thats like trying to compare Cameron Wake and Matt Roth, they play the same position but are completely different players. to answer your question, Davis. Why cant we just have a dynamic CB duo for years to come? Smith may not be the best and is lacking coinfidence as stated above but if Davis becomes the guy who can lockdown guys like (or just contain) Randy Moss, Braylon Edwards and other number ones than i see no reason to think Sean Smith cant lock down on guys like lee evans and clowney and other #2's not named welker or boldin..

A lot of people bag on Smith for his tacking but it has got better and better in my eyes..
He does not seem scared to tackle at ALL to me.. He seems worried to miss in one on one situations so he just holds his guy up now.
If there is a pile or if one person has a guy wrapped up he almost almost comes in and helps. Lets just remember he is a Rookie who has not been playing his position very long and is going up vs #1 and #2 Wr's in the NFL.
I have seen him make some good tackles on rb's and Wr's I think just compared to Vonte who is a natural tackler he looks bad when you compare.

Davis is a playmaker, hard-hitter, and gambler. But he's also the guy you want to throw at, because right now, for every big play he makes, he's likely to make an ill-advised gamble or a rookie mental mistake. He's more likely to bite on fakes.

Smith on the other hand, due mostly to his size, has the potential to be a shutdown corner. He's got plenty of confidence, but he's regularly a step behind. His tackling definitely needs work.

Basically, in training camp, it was evident Vontae had a LOT to work on. Concentration, technique, etc. I think he realized that, hunkered down, and has improved greatly.

Smith looked amazing in the beginning (pre-season). I think this got to his head a bit. He's regularly tweeting and enjoying the night life at a time when it would help to have his nose in the books. He's been inches from being embarrassed in several games this year, and IMHO it's been luck those throws have gone incomplete. I think initially from his play in pre-season he generated some avoidance on the part of opposing QBs..."oh no, a Nnamdi clone!" Now, I'm worried they're going to pick on him a bit more until he starts making some plays.

That all being said, I'm nitpicking because I want them both to perform this year. For rookies, they've done fantastically, they've got a mountain of potential, and I'm excited about their future development.

i totally agree, the guy is a rookie whos only been playing the position for a few years at the most, he used to be a receiver. I think hes played fine for a rookie. Rookies are always going to make mistakes. Through the mistakes hes made i have seen things that show he can be very good. His tackling does need work but im sure theres alot of corners who arent the greatest tacklers but can cover well.

Overall both corners have exceeded my expectations for their first year. I really didnt expect much. Going into training camp we had no idea who was gonna win the 2nd corner spot opposite Will Allen. Sean Smith won it by playing well in the preseason and it looked as if Vontae needed some work. I really didnt expect Sean Smith to tear it up and make the pro bowl this year. I expected him and Vontae to rotate anyway, now they both start cuz Allen went down. I think they will both wind up being very good corners. They both need work and need to learn still. I only see these guys getting better...Chris Clemons too.

i dont care which one is better, i would prefer them both to be great

don't forget that Davis had to learn how to play two positions in camp. playing outside and nickle, whereas Smith was only used outside.

Vonte has been thrown at 45 times with 30 receptions

Sean has been thrown at 44 times with 24 receptions

Vonte has allowed 590 yards on 400 defensive plays

Sean has allowed 453 yards on 558 defensive plays

Seems like Sean has been much better versus the pass but both players give up big plays.

Smith and Davis are at the bottom of nfl corners in allowing average per receptions...Davis is allowing 19.7 yards per reception and Smith is allowing 18.1 yards per reception

I agree that Vontae and Sean both need to work a lot on giving up big plays, and I don't want to sound like I'm making excuses. But, I feel this stat is just as indicative of the poor help coverage from our safeties as it is mistakes from the rookies. Unless they also have unusually high YAC averages (which i guess is possible), who the hell is covering 20 yards down field on these plays? And if we are not calling plays that give these guys some downfield help, then someone needs to get these numbers to Sparano immediately.

Im sure he knows the numbers but remember how the TE's were eating us alive when we were putting Lb's on them..
Our CB's are asked to cover guys one on one no matter where on the field the route takes them.

Yeah, I agree. But that also kind of proves my point that their high ypc averages are also due to deficiencies in the rest of our coverage. Its sad these guys have to develop in a situation where they have to play one on one nearly every play.

Also, TE's seem to kill us regardless of who we put on them.
