4-3 to 3-4 back to 4-3 and now again for the fourth change in 4 years we are looking to go 3-4...
Oh well, I just hope this coaching staff knows what its doing more than the last few have.
No not really. We talked a lot about running a 3-4, but we never did. We ran a 4-3 almost the entire time. The fact of the matter is that our personnel was alwasy geared to a 4-3, and even when we talked about running a 3-4, that's all it was, talk, we ran a 4-3 the whole time.
Traylor played the stout run defending DT, and Carter played the strong end. Holiday played the quick DT and Jason Taylor played the pass rushing DE. You could call Taylor an OLB, but he didn't really play that way. He was on the line the whole time, and why not, he's great at it. He shouldn't be dropping back into coverage, and if he's going to be rushing the passer or pushing at the point of attack, it just makes more sense to put him in a down stance.
Our linebackers were pretty typical of a 4-3. In a 3-4 the linebackers make all the big plays really, but even if you consider Jason Taylor an OLB, we didn't have another OLB in the sense of a 3-4. Our playmakers were our DE's, which is mainly because our best talent was there on the D line.
That being said, I firmly believe that Parcells & Co. WILL switch us over to a 3-4. I definitely see us drafting Red Bryant from Texas A&M in the 3rd round or some other big (both tall and heavy) strong massive NT. I definitely think we'll be adding a bunch of new linebackers over the next 2 years, this season replacing Zach and possibly one other linebacker, and the following year 1 or 2 more. Remember, Parcells was/is basically a defensive sided coach, his specialty is linebackers, and he's going to rebuild this franchise using the principles he espouses and he hired the people who knew and agreed with his systems to be certain that they are run and run correctly. So, yes, an NT and a healthy dose of linebackers, that's on the menu for this draft.
Personally, I don't think Dorsey is a good fit for an NT, and that's waaaaaaay too much money to invest in an NT from a salary-cap perspective, so if we cannot trade down, I just don't see Dorsey in Miami.
Yes, we're gonna play the 3-4, but it'll be the first time in forever as none of these players we have now have played it while at Miami.
