So did we take over the 6th seed in the playoffs with this win?

not sure, but i think the Ravens might have moved up ahead of us with their win today and i think they have a better conference record, not sure though

Why'd the announcers say... "If the playoffs ended today Miami would have the #6 seed"?

at the moment, it's a three-way tie for the final wildcard spot between Jacksonville, Baltimore and us. since no team beat the other two, conference record is the deciding tie-breaker. right now, it's still Jacksonville as 6th seed with a 6-3 conference record. Baltimore is 6-4, we're 5-4.

Baltimore has a 6-4 conference record, Miami has a 5-4 record. So, they have the tie-breaker but they've also played one more conference game than us.

How can Jacksonville still be the 6 seed over the Phins after today's game? Baltimore would have it b/c they are 6-4 in the AFC while the Phins are 5-4 (and have 3 more AFC Games left).

It doesn't matter who would get the 6th spot today. It matters what would happen if the standings remained tied at the end of the season, since each of those three teams has a different number of AFC games remaining.

because it's a three-way tie and head-to-head games only matter if one team beat both or lost to both teams in question, which is called head-to-head sweep. if there is no head-to-head sweep, as in our scenario, conference record is next in line.

ESPN currently has us leading all of the 7-6 teams. These tiebreakers can get complicated, but it seems to me the Ravens should be ahead of us if I applied them correctly:

TO BREAK A TIE FOR THE WILD-CARD TEAM
If it is necessary to break ties to determine the two Wild-Card clubs from each conference, the following steps will be taken.
1. If the tied clubs are from the same division, apply division tie breaker.
2. If the tied clubs are from different divisions, apply the following steps.

Three or More Clubs
(Note: If two clubs remain tied after third or other clubs are eliminated, tie breaker reverts to step 1 of applicable two-club format.)
1. Apply division tie breaker to eliminate all but the highest ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. The original seeding within a division upon application of the division tie breaker remains the same for all subsequent applications of the procedure that are necessary to identify the three Wild-Card participants.
2. Head-to-head sweep. (Applicable only if one club has defeated each of the others or if one club has lost to each of the others.)
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
5. Strength of victory.
6. Strength of schedule.
7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
9. Best net points in conference games.
10. Best net points in all games.
11. Best net touchdowns in all games.
12. Coin toss.

Hopefully next week things will change. The Dolphins need to win and hope the Bills beat the Patriots and/or the Bears beat the Ravens. Also could help if the Colts beat the Jaguars and the Raiders upset the Bronocs.

The Dolphins are still one Baltimore or New England loss away from controlling their own destiny.
