I know we've either signed or invited for tryouts a total of 29 players. But the Browns have 70.......yeah SEVENTY players that they've invited in either as being under contract or invited in for a tryout. Now I know they didn't have a draft pick until round four this year, but being a 10-6 team last year, how many holes do they have to fill? Don't you get to a point of being counterproductive when you have that many bodies coming in? This is just crazy....

70 total players. Tampa Bay had about 54 coming in. I guess if there was a limit by the league, then these teams would conform to it. But I also have to wonder that with our 1-15 team from a year ago, why not invite more than our 29 players? I remember Parcells saying that our draft board is condensed and many players aren't considered draftable players. So I have to wonder if the UDFA pool comes from that list or do they venture outside of it to decide who comes in here this weekend? God knows we've got the need for major competition at so many spots, did we just feel that the 29 who came in are enough or that others really just have no chance at making it?

As BP said in the draft; we are targeting quality, not quantity. I am sure it's the same with UDFAs, he knew who he wanted. Besides, there is only so many reps to go around.

You can only have a max of 80 players on your active roster. Not including IR, PUP or the non football injury list.

Well, tell that to the Browns and Bucs....and then report it to the league because they've broken that rule.

How the F are you going to do a quality evaluation on 80 players?? That sounds too crazy.

How could the Browns have a rookie camp with 4 draft picks?

So I guess we finally get around to the answer to my original question:

There is a limit to signed UDFAs you can have (80), but you can bring in as many for tryouts as you wish?

At least, I think that's where this is going. So if Cleveland likes a couple of the tryout guys and wants to offer contracts, then they'll have to cut a couple who are under contract, I assume - to keep them at 80.

So let's have tryouts for more guys then (of course, it's Sunday so it's too late for the organized practices). I hear QB Ryan O'Hara from Central Oklahoma's still available! :D

One of the other confusing points was that when NFL Europe existed, if you had players over there, then you got exemptions over here. So you could have more than 80 under contract as long as you had some of your signed players over there. I'm not sure if it was a 1 for 1 player swap, but it did allow teams to go over 80. But since NFLE is no more, it's back to all teams conforming to the 80 rule.
