According to the official site, Carter is up to 305 pounds.

With injuries and smaller and/or younger guys at the position, the move is necessary. Not that we didn't see it coming. But this really puts it in our face.

It could be worse, with Bowens, Roth and Holliday out there opposite JT. Holliday will also see time inside. Especially on passing downs IMO.

With Vickerson and Wright not being counted on for much this season, the DL rotation will be very interesting this season.

Yeah, I said that a few days ago.

I think it'll look like:

Jason Taylor / David Bowens
Keith Traylor / Dario Romero
Kevin Carter / Manuel Wright (Larry Chester if and when he is 100%)
Vonnie Holliday / Matt Roth.

That is still very very good.

Way to early to make that determination. Roth could challenge, and Bowens hasn't lost his starting postion yet. We even extended him.

Is that a typo or you don't think Jeff Zgonina makes the roster??

I think Zgonina makes the roster, but if we were talking about stuffing the run then Zgonina is not the person to count on.

I think he should see some time during passing downs, but I'd like to see Wright get as much playing time as possible and develop him quickly.

What determination? Who else do we have?

...and I know we extended David Bowens. But he is a good pass rusher who is best coming in on passing situations.

Yes, he started last year. Our run defense was horrible. The first and most important thing for a D is to stop the run. David Bowens is average at best when it comes to stopping the run.

Holliday is lightyears better at it, and on passing downs he'll slide inside and David Bowens will rush the edge.

You are thinking too much in terms of our old defense. In Saban's 4-3, the difference between the LDE and Undertackle is pretty much the same, and the positioning isnt much different.

This is a bit outdated, but it pretty much sums up what Saban's 4-3 looked like at LSU. It looks alot like the 3-4 actually.

he probably will be playing a little bit of both considering Saban will be trying to work in as much 3-4 with JT at outisde linebacker. in the 3-4 we should se him at DE and in the 4-3 we will see him inside. Thats awesome that he has gotten himself that big that shows that he is willing to put in the effort that Saban wants him to. Hes going to be our biggest defense acquistion i think this year

I'm sure there's more to come in terms of personnel signed to this team, it's making it very difficult to get a fix on who might be sticking. My 53 man roster keeps changing week to week.

I cant begin to say how happy I am about this. Not that I didnt see it coming but it confirms that Roth will see a lot of time right away and this D can use some attitude, energy and spark. :)

That should work as a nice line if we don't get any more injuries. But some guys there are at the age where injuries become common.

Does anyone think that Bowens was extended for a year to make it easier to trade him to someone? i think he has more value being under a 2 year contract than he does under a one year deal. I know we take a bigger hit trading him cap wise, but we may be able to land a 3rd round pick, myabe from a cleveland or washington. God knows there are plenty of teams that he could start for and be a significant upgrade.

I wouldn't read too much into weights right now. Kevin Carter may be 305 right now, on the eve of training camp, but he's likely to lose about 10 pounds or so in the florida heat during practices.

Heck, Todd Wade lost 10 pounds in one practice once.

I'd like to see Carter play DT almost all the time. IMO we're fine at DE without Carter. We lack good DT players though.
