As part of our ongoing Stat of the Day series, we're digging deep into our spreadsheets to run a new stat every weekday until Super Bowl XLIV.
Today, we'll look at which defensive linemen led the league in Stop Rate against the run. This measures Plays against the run (any tackle or assist, according to official play-by-play) which counts as successful under FO terms: preventing the offense from getting 45 percent of yards on first down, 60 percent on second down, or 100 percent on third and fourth down. Along with Stop Rate for each player, I'm running the average yardage gain when the player made a Play.
This year's leader is a big surprise.

Of course, this says nothing about how well he forces double teams and things like that. I honestly didn't pay attention to how well he did in that regard. But on the surface it looks like Soliai did a solid job after Ferguson went down. That list has some pretty good names on it.

EDIT: That chart didnt work at all
Just go to the link. It will be in a good format there

doesn't really say much, just says when he made the tackle it was generally not for a big gain...

it doesn't take into account all the time he could have been put on his *** so he couldn't have made the tackle...

Yea. And the biggest thing is whether or not hes drawing double teams. I dont watch for that stuff so I have no idea honestly. But regardless, I guess its at least good that hes making some positive plays out there. I think it says that hes at least average and worth keeping around.

There was a reason/reasons why we went from ONE OF THE BEST teams in the NFL defending the run then dropping to number 18

I really thought Soliai did a good job. I watched him close a lot and that dude made plays. He wasn't consistent but he's still relatively new and at various points guys like Aubrayo Franklin weren't considered to be very good at this either. He showed promise. But other guys around him were not getting the job done.

Need someone aside from Ayodele at ILB. Need more versatility in the scheme. Need a very different 1-2 combination at WOLB and SOLB. Probably need a real free safety, not just a guy that wants to be a strong safety.

I thought Paul played great last year. Its our linebackers that suck. Crowder hits like a cream puff.

CK exactly what I have been saying. The defensive line played well. They were let down by our LB and Safety play. We need a new starting ILB, new starting FS and a new starting SOLB I think. The defensive line and the corners are doing okay i feel.

Everyone knows Akin needs to go, but Im surprised nobody mentions how bad Crowder looked. Would not surprise me to see Miami draft an ILB & draft one.

I do not trust Paul.

Nor do I, although he's undeniably improved.

When I envision us in an attacking 4-3 and what the DTs might look like, settling for a 3-4 and Paul Soliai in a prominent role is sickening.

Regardless, Football Outsiders tries too hard, particularly in individual categories. This purported stat is preposterously flawed. Check the comments below the entry on their site. Luckily the main points had already been covered by others so I didn't bother. Instead of evaluating assignment and result play after play they blindly settle for who officially made the tackle and what the down and distance was. As someone pointed out in the comments, a player was better off whiffing the tackle and not showing up at all, than making the tackle beyond the cutoff point.

That site found a void but they want to pretend football stats are as concrete and valid as in baseball, which is not true. Their top categories are interesting but the blend and weighting is poor, which leads to nonsense like this season, when their DVOA efficiency ratings spit out Baltimore as #1, followed by Green Bay, Philadelphia and New England. Does Baltimore really stand out as a team that should have won 12.1 games in the regular season? They had merely a +0.4 YPPA Differential, which is barely above average, and fits with their 9-7 record. The Colts were #2 (to San Diego) in YPPA Differential and New Orleans was #3. I'll stick to that fundamental stat, while Football Outsiders finds creative ways to assert New Orleans was the 6th most efficient team in the league, and Indianapolis #8.
