Henson at the bat: Drawing a bead on Drew

By NEIL STRATTON
Inside the League

The biggest names in the sports media, from ESPN’s Ed Werder to The Sporting News’ Dan Pompei, were there.
New Astro Roger Clemens, of all people, was there. Even a guy who showed up in dress shoes claiming to have a scheduled “workout for the Bills†was there.

Oh, and about 60-70 scouts from 20 NFL teams were there, all at the Houston Texans’ practice bubble to watch one Drew Henson, the once-great Michigan QB and once-less than great Yankees 3B who will give football another try in the 2004 season.

What happened?

At 11:30 a.m. sharp, Casserly stepped to the podium set up at the Texans’ practice bubble and announced that Henson would be making 70-75 throws to four receivers starting at noon. He added that he would not be running the 40, doing reps or other drills, and that while he was confident that all throws would be covered, Henson would also be available to fill other reasonable requests as needed after the main workout.

The former Wolverine started on the 10-yard line and threw one route each to the receivers, then walked to the 50 and did the same back toward the end zone. Henson looked strong and athletic while starting off with some standard slants and square-ins, if maybe a little too hyped up; several of his initial passes lacked touch and bounced off the hands of his intended targets. He started with mainly three-step drops, but continued on to five- and seven-step drops as he progressed through the workout, which lasted about a half-hour.

Who was there?

(All but 12 teams were there).

....Of course, so they wouldn’t tip their respective hands. They didn’t miss anything, as the Texans filmed the entire workout from two angles and will edit it onto a videotape any team can have for $25, a charge that will cover the team’s expenses in putting the tape together.
